Nabokov claimed by Islanders. Will not report & Can't be traded
Does this make sense to anyone? Did Detroit actually do a favour for the Islanders, i.e. Detroit knew full well he would have never passed through waivers to them. Detroit really had little interest in him. Isles wanted him all along but if they had of signed him to the exact same contract Detroit did then Isles would have lost him on waivers to a team above them. If this was discussed in the first thread I apologize.
Or is this the arrangement that people thought the Devils might make with the Wings?
I don't get why so many are upset. Even if the Islanders didn't claim him there was NO WAY he was making it to Detroit. Nabokov put himself in this position - having to go through waivers - so I don't really feel sorry for him.
Maybe the GM from a team like Chicago of San Jose asked the Islanders to claim Nabokov and keep him out of the Western Conference and offered in return a sweeter deal for someone else in the future...Just a possibility
Yeah but can you even begin to understand the point as why Garth "Im effing Terrible at my Job" Snow even did this?
Did he suddenly feel like a 13th place finish is worth more than a 15th or 14th place finish?
It stupid, because Nabokov gives them a chance to win a few games, and hurt their chances a better draft picks which we know they are banking on.
So essentially this was a stupid, stupid move.
You know they have to sell John Tavares right? He wants the team to improve and the only way they can do that is if their young guns get a chance to actually win games. Draft picks are nice and all, but it's not like he's passing up a Crosby, or Ovechkin here. He can get some wins out of this, improve his team and still get a good player in the top 5. So it's not number one and they don't draft Larsson, but they get a winner like Landeskog, or take Murphy who is pretty much like Streit, but cheaper.
They also need a new arena and the only way they get that is if they have wins, not shiny draft picks.
These guys are competitive and they want to win, so they will do anything for that. Good on Snow and the Isles.
The islanders take themselves out of a lottery pick (or probably will), and they can't turn and trade him, so the point of this was... ?
Unless they plan on trading their 1st for already proven talent and don't want it to be a top 3 pick, then why ?
More important to this team than picking 3 instead of 5 is developing a winning culture and developing your players.
I think they moved Roloson hoping Lawson could get the job done and Poulin could develop in Bridgeport. With Lawson getting hurt last night, and Nabokov becoming available it made sense.
The Isles can go out and play every night. That will help Tavares, Okposo etc. to develop.
Also, it isn't like this is going to take them out of the lottery completely. They may pass Ottawa, and possibly Toronto (who is playing well), but they are 10 points behind the #6 pick.
From my perspective and as a Red Wings fan, at least be went to an Eastern Conference team that we don't have to compete with. If he went to the Blackhawks it could have really sucked.

That's a bingo. Finally a smart and educated post. Nothing else need be said.
Well too bad for the Wings and Nabokov. Though I'm sure the Howard fantasy owners are relieved . Still an ugly move by the Islanders and doubt he'll report. Oh well the season is over half way over so he'll just have to wait until the offseason.
Well this is a first...everyone's usually all high-and-mighty when it comes to "tanking" or whatever stupid thing you call it. Now some seem to complain that the Islanders were stupid to do this because they might place a little higher than their position now, which condones tanking, right?
Nabokov is wishing he and his agent could go back to draft weekend when they had an offer on the table from the Flyers. It would certainly beat what he's going through this season.
yea but he likely got a few million from Russia before he bailed
