BTW...Ov's shot extends the defensive zone. Lack of a shot contracts it. The less the Caps are a threat to score from distance the less defense is required there.
This is obvious.
But when Ovie's can't shoot, he can't shoot. We need to stop forcing the issue and work with what we have.
thrashers play us tough this year. Ill be happy if we get any points tonight. Tampa seems to be rolling and making it hard to catch up. I always assumed we would go a win streak and take hold of the Div but that #5 seed and 1st round death matchup vs philly/pitt is looking like a reality.
looks like we may be OTL'ing our way into playoffs this year. do they have an equivalent of Presidents Trophy for Most Overtime Losses?
rangers game wasn't horrible the other night. gaborik goal was fluke. holtby was great till SO (and then he was horrific. i'm still impressed by the poster here who predicted both the undressing of BH and the importance of last-resort poke check. i wish BH had gone w/ diving poke check on fourth shooter, too.) oh well. no SO's in playoffs.
i'm hoping Ovie comes out roaring tonite. especially in 1st period. the 1st-period goal does wonders for both him and his team.
personally, I could pass on watching hockey from now til the trade deadline. particularly this current caps team. if they are going to win in the most boring and painful to watch way, let me watch them win games that mean something.
as for allstar stuff. the baseball allstar game still looks like an actual game. the nascar allstar race is for actual money. its an actual race. otherwise, why bother.
but the NASCAR all-star race doesn't count for points. so in that sense, it's not a real race either.
all-star games are generally lame.
i wish there weren't 2-week break before super bowl. sucks the life out of the event. too much hype and downtime.
Speed is a tool, but you have to be able to finish. Chimera is a 10 on the speed scale. He is not much of an offensive player.

i generally agree. but i still love the addition of Chimera's speed and chippiness to the top line. i think it has rejuvenated all 3 players.
departing top-liner Noobs, on the other hand, looks slow and turnover-prone. then again, he still manages to score the occasional key goal, like the one in SO loss to Pens prior to WC. and the first goal in WC itself. and the recent jamming home of backstrom rebound (i forget which game.)
to me, boudreau tinkers too much. now that we have some energy on that top-line, i hope he sticks with it for good long time.
yes. traffic in front of net. and the "power" in power play. we need to get both back.
Traffic in front of the net, particularly on the PP in the form of Laich and Knuble, hasnt really done much. I think getting new blood on the PP may provide the life and energy needed to shake the PP our of its funk. Power, we have one power forward. We need a big burly 2C (SSDDecade) to help out Ovi. We are largely shooting blanks lately.
Yeah, but Biron was in net, so we can use the same "Hot Goaltender" excuse from the 2008 playoffs
Glad I didn't pay for Monday night's game or I would have been PO'd. The mighty Matt Hendricks was the only Capital that could fire a rocket past 5 time MVP and 12 time Cup winner Martin "The Legend" Biron. It was quite disgraceful

Nicky B, too, snuck one past Hall of Fame inductee Biron, in shootout.

Many real races are not for points as part of a championship. The NASCAR allstar race is actually more of a real race than a points race. Its a winner takes all race where there are no consequences for trying to win. Except the expense of broken and bent equipment and the pain of a broken and bent driver.
I am telling you know, if each member of the winning NHL allstar team took home a million bucks and the losers got nothing, it would be a hockey game. its a ridiculous notion to do that, but if you made the stakes high enough the players would play the game to win.

i defer to you on NASCAR. all i know about the sport i learned from 7-year-old son, who became a rabid #24 fan just in time to see ... #48 win five straight championships.
fortunately my son's focus has switched to NHL. watching a Caps game with him is a lot more fun than spending 3 hours waiting for final caution flag to level the field with 5 laps to go.
Go, Caps!!!!!!!!! (And for God's sake, let's keep an eye on Evander Kane tonight. Seems like that guy scores 2 goals against us every time.)

He also got a huge goal in the Philly game, putting home a Johansson rebound.
I don't get the Knuble hate. He's been the only Capital scoring with any sort of consistency recently. His job has never been the primary puck carrier, so I don't know why people are surprised when he's not doing a great job at it now that the other teams are clamping down on Ovie and Nicky isn't creating as much space. Knuble is the corner-battler, the goal screener, the rebound scorer, and the defensively responsible forward. And he's still doing all those things well.
