Martin is a bad coach , he outcoach really bad coaches and gets destroyed when he face a real one in the playoff with a equal team. He's quite good to stay competitive and never have THAT bad of a team , but his mentality will be his downfall as far as winning it all.You give this guy the best team in the league I would bet a lot they won't win.
This is a pretty good thread, with the constant calls for Martin's head, I would be curious to hear some of the level headed opinions on this and why.
The truth is if we are picking from the coaches that are out there right now, I'm starting to think that Marc Crawford might not have been a terrible choice. I would be curious as to why they chose Martin over Crawford because you have to think he was considered.
He has done as good a job as Martin with a lower payroll, although Crawford does have something Martin does not that being a genuine superstar in Richards. He also has something else that Martin doesn't and that is a Stanley Cup ring as a head coach.
I know a lot of you will say that Martin got his team into the playoffs and deep last year, while Crawford sank in Dallas last year. You would be right in saying that, but Crawford has his team playing much better than the Habs this year. Again, it can be argued that Martin has done more with less, it's true, but I would hazard to guess that Crawford would be a more liked coach by the fans in Montreal.
The other thing that we need to take into account, is that the coach absolutely must speak French. For a lot of you this is a ridiculous concept, and although I will admit that it's true it seriously cuts our choices, it has to be done. With all the press in Montreal, and all the interviews that the coach must do, he has to be able to answer questions in French. I mean really, the coach is often the voice for the team, much more so than the captain, so please don't shoot off the "well the captain doesn't speak French" Saku Koivu argument.
I may be wrong, but I think it will never happen again in Montreal that we don't have a French speaking coach. Look at the coaches in the NHL that are French speaking, and ones that are out there unemployed (NHL experienced), which one would you take?
There is not much to choose from there. Like I said, the best one (in my opinion) is already taken in Dallas. The best choice would be to pick from an up and comer but again everyone was clamoring for an experienced coach, well I guess you should be careful what you ask for eh? Martin is the coach with the 3rd most experience in the league after Wilson and Lemaire.
To me it would be Dave Tippett. I love how the Coyotes play, aggressive forecheck and defencemen always jumping in the play. There are always two players going after the puck and they never stop skating. It's amazing what he's done with a Coyotes team that has no offensive stars.
