Would you trade this for Penner?

I proposed sending Butler, Pysyk, and our 1st for Dustin Penner. Edmonton fans all said that they would accept this, too. I know it's an overpayment, but I would absolutely love to get Penner in Buffalo. We desperately need a RW like him. The 1st rounder likely wouldn't be a lottery pick, since with Penner I think we would make the playoffs.

What do you guys think?

its a good idea. however i don't think he is worth two first round picks. maybe send connolly the other way?

our right side would be

penner
stafford
pominville
kaleta

No no, we are desperate for centers, not for RW's. Top 6 centers are the only thing I would be willing to overpay for. And whoever said Penner for Vanek I hope is kidding.

Way too much for a guy who's UFA after next year.

Pass, big time.

If we need Centers, who do you propose we get? Brad Richards is the only Center in FA worth getting, and we all know he isn't coming to Buffalo. Are there any #2 Centers that are on the trading block we could get for a package like this?

We have the cap space to resign him. He's only 27. He's big, physical (Well, sometimes), and talented.

the only problem with signing him might be staffords rfa contract and i really don't want to loose drew.

Just because we can't get a center for that package doesn't mean we should overpay with that package and subsequently give a contract to a RW like Penner. If we tie that money up in Penner, we can't get that center regardless. We could probably get Penner for our first round pick alone since we probably won't be in the playoffs and his contract is up, and then you want to give up Butler and Pysyk too? Craziness imo

I am, sorta...

I have a theory that if you swapped Penner this year for Vanek, Penner would put up the same numbers.

It's not a knock on Vanek, it a knock on the rest of the top 6 on this team.

I am sure we could get more for Vanek than just Penner though.

lol I don't see how you could logically deduce that they would have the same numbers, then you contradict yourself saying it's the rest of the team and we could get more for Vanek. But to each his own, you believe in your theory, I'll believe in the better player.

Find a center who fits that profile and you might get more of us on board.

Although it would be special to have Kevin Lowe's two ******* contracts on one team.

With Stafford coming along and Kassian on the way, I fail to see any need for Penner when we have much bigger holes at Center.

Giving up two 1st rounders for a RW we don't need is balls crazy

This. Even if we have to give up a better package, center is a far bigger need than RW and a position of greater importance.

Because given the makeup of the Sabres, I dont see Vanek going much above 60 points a year.

I do think he's a better player than Penner, just not on this team, the way it is.

Richards is the top of the summer food chain. However, there will be a number of teams looking to reshape their lineups or make room for contracts. Those situations will arise dynamically -- some players that might get that squeeze or be part of a reshuffle could be Bryan Little in Atlanta, Mike Fisher in Ottawa, Jarret Stoll in LA, Mike Ribeiro in Dallas if they re-sign Richards might all be shuffled around depending upon who is signed and where. Yes, the UFA market is weak, but there is still something to shopping for signed players or even RFA's this summer with the assets proposed in this deal.

And, RW is a position of strength for the Sabres, with Pominville, Stafford (RFA), Kaleta, Kassian, Vanek (if needed), and possibly McCormick (UFA). Penner does not fill a need.

He's on pace for 69 points this year. Penner is not a fit here at all, he's a poor man's version of Vanek scoring wise and doesn't use his body nearly enough. Like everyone else has said, Stafford, Pominville, Kassian, Kaleta is good enough at RW, especially since Vanek or McCormick can shift over with ease. Centers, centers, centers, not RW where we have a logjam.

It's a 3mil cap hit difference. All I am saying is that for that 3mil more, I expect alot more than a 10 point gap between him and Penner.

Eh, I might trade out Brennan for another prospect. He would only be a Sabre for a year and a half barring re-signing him and I think Brennan could be used in a package for a Center.

Plus he's probably our best prospect that isn't a blue-chipper. Or at least somewhere very close to that.

using kassian as leverage for not bringing in a top 6 forward is a bit fanatical. Kassian could learn a lot from penner and that might even be a good enough reason to trade for him.

I totally agree that giving up two firsts for him is crazy.

however i really like what we would have on the right side

some line ideas

hecht connolly penner
vanek roy stafford
grier ennis pominville
mccormick gaustad kaleta

i'd trade pysyk and enroth.

Would not mind. Mancari is apparently never going to be a Sabre, we're stacked as far as young blue line prospects go, and it gets Connolly out.
