Shortly after the Islanders highlights started, I had to exit the video. Too depressing . The kid is exactly what we fans want for Kesler's line this year.
Yeah, I was so mad when they traded him, it should have been Raymond!
I was furious when we traded Grabner but came around when I thought Ballard would be alright. That didn't turn out too well.
I can't get over it either because Grabner is the exact player we need now. Maybe we would have won the cup had that trade not happened, just saying.
People need to quit re-writing history.
At the time Grabner was a redundant asset as Gillis noted and as he was not expected to make the team out of camp, he would have been lost on waivers... as happened in Florida.
"With Mason Raymond's emergence, with our lineup, it would have been very difficult for Michael to get in. If Mason continues to advance and gets into the 30-goal category, our third line can't be constituted with guys who are goal scoring players. We were fortunate to have that kind of redundancy so we could look at trade like this.
"Grabner is a really good player with big upside. But you're not going to get an NHL defenceman without giving up a player like that."
He had a bad training camp (as his past history) was waived by Florida and only because the Islanders were so abysmal did he stick long enough on the roster to begin to come around after a very poor start.
It would never have happened in Vancouver and he would have been an asset lost with no return.
Raymond was coming off a good season and looked to be trending upwards.

Even though we're the better team you probably win the Cup if Raymond plays Game 7.
Completely let us off the hook for having Recchi on the second line in Vancouver.
Game 7 was the only game of the playoffs I didn't **** my pants out of fear of Recchi costing us a goal...why...NO RAYMOND! And guess what line popped in all 4 of ours?
And Grabners better than Raymond Raymond is just unfilled potential. Hes like Tony Granato in NHL 93 who you put on the line with Gretzky cause hes 100 speed but he still isn't that great. Sucks you lost Grabner, hes just who you need to play with Kesler. Its a joke that possibly the games best 2 way player can't get a respectable linemate. I think Patrice Bergeron has a claim to be the best even strength player in hockey right now (not overall he isn't good on the PP for a star and Crosby and Malkin healthy are better) but a healthy Kesler is probably a little better than my beloved #37.
Bergeron's a clutch player. I always had a feeling he would come up big against us somewhere, somehow. Vastly underrated. Not sure why you say we'd have won if Raymond wasn't hurt, as the Bergeron line was matched up against the Sedins.
Glad for Glass and Rypien that they found a new home with the Jets though. If it wasn't the Canucks, at least Rypien is with people who know him well as a person
BTW:
I hate it how the Canucks handle their prospects.
They let go grabner and Shirokov for absolutely nothing.
Next up: Cody Hodgson to whoever for another physical 4thliner and a pick.....
Grabner was part of the trade for Keith Ballard and Victor Oreskovich.
It was Florida who let him go on waivers to the Islanders. Had Grabner not been traded he would have been lost on waivers by the Canucks. See post #429

"our third line can't be constituted with guys who are goal scoring players."
this is where I don't see eye to eye with the Canucks organization.
you can slot 30 goal scorers anywhere. Just because you are a goal scorer, doesn't mean you can't compete on a 3rd line. Gillis could have kept both Grabner and Raymond really.

Same here. You never see our 3rd liners go on a tear like Cleary or Bergenheim. IMO we were too obsessed with becoming 'tougher' and 'harder to play against' in the bottom 6 that we had no room left for skill. Add that to a top-heavy team and you see why we struggled offensively in the playoffs.
