The general consensus is that he's been overachieving and he's the 6th best defenceman in the division behind:

1. Giordano
2. Bouwmeester
3. Regehr
4. Brett Burns
5. Ryan Whitney
Well, since we're tied for first in the league, and we don't have a single defender in the top 5 in a pretty poor division...I guess this means that they think Luongo is a world beating goalie.

Seems like a reasonable poll to make. Maybe a thread on the main board.

This analogy is faulty.

If you were saying that, "None of our players have playoff experience, that's why I'm doubtful of our success", then yeah, that would work.

It's a perfectly logical approach to be doubtful of Ballard because he's never been on a playoff team before. I'm not saying he will falter; I'm merely saying we have to see. Many athletes look good on poor teams, but can't handle the pressure. That's all I'm saying could happen. I need to see him perform on a contender.

8 to 10 weeks.

So essentially Early to mid April.

Lets hope it's early April so he can get some games in before that.

I don't see what the big deal is, really. We have a perfect record this season with Edler out of the line-up.

Ps I hate the hockey gods today.

The former is most likely and it could be somewhere such as the Cambie Surgery Centre or False Creek Health Centre (there are others) :

Also, the surgery is recommended to people that had leg pain for 6 weeks.

We really need an expert here.
That is your average person and may be generally true.

It does not apply to pro athletes who would have the top specialists and diagnosticians availble. If the scan showed a ruptured disc (as it apparently did) then getting it fixed now seems the way to go.

That was the same with Daniel Sedin. He had the surgery within a few days of suffering the injury in the 2001 World Championships.

I've always believed that injuries make a huge impact on a team (vs everyone who likes to parrot the "injuries are no excuse" line), and losing your #1 defender to injury/surgery is bound to make your team less effective.

Does anyone actually think that the Hawks would have won their Stanley Cup without Keith? The only team I can think of in recent memory that lost a significant player and still won, was the Av's when they lost Forsberg. That is such a freaking anomaly.

Funny, but if Henrik went down with an injury, I would be very tempted to convert Daniel to center. He would likely suck on draws, but he moves the puck equally as well Henrik and would be a great scoring threat as a rover. The pass to Sweatt for the game winner last night really got me thinking about how effective he is as a player.

Anyway, this is the kind of thing that is going to force the guys to continue to commit to the team game. While we there certainly are players who can fill the position, none of them are of Edler's caliber... imo. Having Salo and Alberts back on the bottom pairing should go a long way in mitigating his absence.
It's also hard to think of a team with 6 top 4 Dmen. We are in uncharted waters.

If you guy's want a laugher, go into that Beauchemin to Vancouver thread, and check out the guy who said Schenn = Edler.

In fact, he didn't just say it in passing, he's actually trying to develop an argument.

At least he's in good hands, Marcel Dvorak is considered one of the best (if not the best) spinal surgeons in Canada.

That place is always great for a chuckle. Basically CDC for flames fans. They troll their own site and the mods are horrible. You would think they would be more in tune with rival teams. I would keep Edler over any flames D esp. when considering the J BO contract. He's basically an overpaid figure-skater who is softer than melted butter. Good defensively, I know but nothing near spectacular.

Just heard about this, absolutely awful news. I'm one of the people that thinks that Edler is already a legitimate #1 defenseman in the league and he's been playing absolutely brilliantly lately. Huge loss for us that will be made much easier by the Salo situation and the fact that even with losing Edler, we still have 4 top 4 guys on the team and shouldn't be too affected through the regular season with the depth we have (and crossing my fingers for no more significant injuries). Getting Hamhuis + Ballard and not trading Bieksa now looks like absolute brilliance. Just really, really hoping Edler will be back for the playoffs.

This is the worst thing to happen. Ever.

Makes me want to go out and get another depth defenseman for the playoffs.

Dr. Dvorak has an impressive resume as spinal surgeon - world class. He was one of the treating physicians when Steve Moore was injured.

Dr. Dvorak is currently a full Professor and Head of the Academic Division of Spine, Department of Orthopaedics, at the University of British Columbia. He is also Medical Director of the Combined Neurosurgical and Orthopaedic Spine Program (CNOSP) at the Vancouver General Hospital. A strong proponent of clinical and academic focus through sub-specialization, he confines his practice to adult spine surgery.

His teaching efforts have been focused on the education of spine surgeons in advanced spinal surgical decision-making and techniques. He has served as faculty on numerous courses and has chaired advanced spine courses in Banff, Alberta, Vancouver, and Bermuda. He is currently a co-chair of the Spine Trauma Study Group, an international group of forty neuro and ortho spine surgeons who are committed to advancing our understanding of spine trauma management through education and research.

Edler could not be in better hands.

Looks like the surgery will likely be done at Cambie Surgery Centre as he is on staff there as well for spinal surgery:

Could everybody stop hyping up Dr. Dvorak? I'm nervous. I hope everything goes well for Eddie and he's back by playoffs. (no pun intended)

So...........nobody actually knows anything about Salo? Has anybody ever actually said he would play this season, like Salo himself, or Gillis?
I hear a lot of wishful thinking but probably from the same people who had Bieska traded 3 months ago.

They said 2011 but they wouldn't say if he would play because that could screw up his cap plans if other people knew about Salo and how close he really was.

We haven't been that lucky with injuries we have been fortunate enough to have depth to cover up. Up front we have had more luck (fingers crossed).
haha, Bieksa has be the only guy who hasn't been injured.

Now isn't that ironic. Sometimes I think the fates just really like messing with Canucks fans.

Both Gillis and Salo said he will likely play in 2011 if he is able to return.

^^^

Just thought I'd share that from CDC. Very funny. Starts of by calling Salo Swedish and then says we should not "hire" Swedish defenseman because Edler isn't very durable (first major injury ever)

The LOLs are to be had.
