There are about 11 weeks from today to when the playoffs are likely to start. If his recovery from his surgery is 7-8 weeks, it gives him 3 weeks to get into game shape.

****** news, regardless, but hopefully he'll be available for the playoffs.

Why does this always have to happen to the Canucks!?!?!?!
Anywho, I hope he is back to his dominate self by the playoffs (although he wont have much time).

And Ballard will finally get some ice time.

At least nobody will be able to say that Gillis is hiding a salary so Salo can come back. Edler is the last defender I would want to lose. That's pretty much the only positive thing I can think of and I'm the world's worst cheerleader.

Just so people know, this is the same problem that Hodgson thought he had. I hope this is really obvious this time, or the doctors have read a bit more about this subject now.

As for not being allowed to bend, twist or lift? That seems pretty stupid, and I was never told that when I nearly ended up having this surgery. Why would the team want him to rush back by getting the surgery if it would just mean him getting worse? All the information I was told was that the problem area gets fused together making it very unlikely to cause a future problem.

And this is why we don't care that we traded Grabner for Ballard.

****** news. Edler was putting together a real good season. We'll have to remember that he is injury prone when talk of his new contract comes around.

I'm pissed right off about this...

We finally have a 50 pt pace defenseman who is playing great defensively and we lose him a couple months before playoffs. ****. I remember thinking at the Nashville game there how much we were missing Edler's presence, well ****, it's really gonna be missed in the coming months.

This may turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Ballard is finally going to get the ice-time he deserves. Salo will be able to come back and get back in shape long before the playoffs. With Edler out until roughly 3 weeks left in the season, this essentially guarantees that we're able to keep Bieksa for the playoffs.

I wouldn't be suprised at all if we suddenly heard Gillis say "We've also had some good news that Salo is back on track, and should be back relatively soon".

I'm gunna have to give MG some praise for not jumping the gun on trading Bieksa. I mean this stuff happens to us all the time!

I hope the back doesn't become a recurring injury...I know Zetterberg always has problems with his.

Some spine surgeons restrict a patient from bending, lifting, or twisting for the first six weeks following surgery. However, since the patient's back is mechanically the same, it is also reasonable to return to a normal level of functioning immediately following this spine surgery.
Quote:
The success rate for microdiscectomy spine surgery is approximately 90% to 95%, although 5% to 10% of patients will develop a recurrent disc herniation at some point in the future.

What is this surgery for? Wikipedia says it is for disc degeneration, but I have a hard time believing that happens from a hit.

How do we like Ballard now. Wow. So glad we have him here.

It's just absurd how many injuries we have on the back end. Rome, Alberts, and now Edler all within what, a week and a half of each other? This is just stupid.

Edler is our best defenseman, any injury to him is not a blessing in disguise. If it were any of our other defensemen, fine, maybe.. But not Edler.

IF he does make it back 7 weeks from now, he has 3 weeks to get in shape for playoffs. That really isn't too much time at all, since the playoffs are played at such a fast pace.

Welcome back Salo!
Gillis you're a genius! Hiring people to operate on Edler to be able to put him onto LTIR

Seriously, though, while our depth will get us through this, Edler is a huge loss. Workhorse on D, PP QB (ugh I hate having Samuelsson at the point!! ), and over all most consistent defenseman we've had all season. I hope it's not too long that he's out.

I had one of these about 7 years ago. Luckily the team has the pull to make this happen immediately, so hopefully his rehab goes very well.

Sigh... at a loss for words.

Edler was a beast in the Kings series. Played like a #1 in that ENTIRE round (vs just being great in a couple games).

It is a surgical treatment for a herniated disc.

Thanks. Hopefully they have learned from the Hodgson situation and diagnose it properly this time.

In 2001 after an injury in the World Championships Daniel Sedin had surgery for a herniated disc. He still needs to do a lot of pre-game stretching and treatments but it has not affected his play.

Canucks have been relatively healthy this year. I know it sucks that Edler is the one to get hurt, but with the Sedins being healthly (like always and Kesler being mostly healthy) I don't know if we can complain too much. Hopefully all those rumours about Salo never playing again were just MG blowing smoke and we'll see Sami back in the line-up shortly after the ASG.

If Edler is out 6-8 weeks and back in the line-up for the final week of the season (if there's room/someone else is injured), then I think we can see this as a bullet dodged.

Also, this pretty much guarantees the Canucks will have about 1.5 million + any salary they can shed to make a deadline acquisition if they want to.

Wow, not good news at all, but this is exactly why we kept Bieksa. Salo can now come back, but even if he does get hurt we still have Bieksa-Hamhuis, Ehrhoff-Ballard. We can hang on to Alberts and Rome for a while longer now, and if we have to end up waiving them in 7 weeks to activate Edler off LTIR we can do so because Tanev has proven he can play a steady game as our number 6 when need be.

Hopefully Edler comes back at 100% and can get himself back into game shape the last 3 weeks of the season.
