Sami Salo is 36 years old and coming off a year without hockey and an extremely serious, career threatening injury.
If you're expecting a vintage Sami Salo to suddenly materialize in the lineup you're in for a disappointment.
Fortunately we'll hopefully still have four healthy top four D at that point (Hamhuis, Bieksa, Ehrhoff, and Ballard) so that Salo will only have to play sheltered minutes until he's "fully up to speed".
I understand this, as my post indicates. However, before Gillis would have been reticent to spend any of that "free" LTIR space because he didn't know when Salo could/would be activated. If they're fairly sure Edler will be out until the post-season they can use that cap space to add salary for the stretch drive. That's all I'm saying.
Agreed. I was under the impression you were getting at this whole pro-rated crap that had been proven incorrect.

Never underestimate AV's ability to put Ballard with Salo on the bottom pairing to ensure Ballard doesn't approach anything more than 16 minutes.
I like how fast this thread is moving. 5 pages in a little over an hour... shows how much we love Eddie. Maybe we can send some positive vibes his way and he'll recover sooner than later.
Edler is fantastic... and there are NO gaurantees but Salo > Edler when healthy. Definitely wouldn't WANT this to happen but it's not all that bad.
Salo will all of a sudden "be ready" to play.
These delusions about Salo are crazy. At no point during Salo's time here has he had the all-around game that Edler has shown this year. Yet, you think Salo when he comes back healthy could potentially be an upgrade on him? That's not even factoring age or rustiness. Crazy.

The guy has been going out of his way to downplay Edler's achievements this year, what did you expect? I'm not sure what his issue with Edler is but he certainly seems to have one...

upgrade? What lines are you reading between?
All I'm saying is it's not like like we're playing Yann Sauve instead of Edler.
My surgery was fairly major, due to a large bulging disc pressing against nerves and what not. 3 hour surgery, 5 nights in hospital, and about 6 months of rehab with minor issues to this day.
Most of my problems stemmed from it taking about 4 months for a proper diagnosis and then almost 2 months of waiting for surgery, which is why my rehab took a long time.
Edler should be able to rehab fairy quickly and will have a lot of support to do so.
Cody...is that you?
Edit - Now for the remainder of his career, the rest of the HF population is going to label Edler as injury prone!

3 months ago there was a thread about "Is Edler a #1 defenceman". I said no, he's our best defenceman in the line up but he's not quite at a #1 status IMO. Yay... big issue. Thank you please try again.
How long before Edler can be put on IR? Is it a week? Can Salo be removed from IR or does he have to wait a period of time after being removed?
My understanding(and Wetcoaster can probably confirm or correct this) is they can place Edler on the LTIR whenever they wish. However, the timing can be important--as it was at the start of the season--to get the maximum amount of cap relief possible, so we may not necessarilly see him go on right away.

Rome, per sportsnetmurph:

EDIT: It was 2-3 weeks for Alberts per the White Towel.
Lehtonen, Khabibulin, Sakic, Brewer, and Bolland have had similar surgeries midseason.
Bolland and Lehtonen were to only ones to return that season and 12 weeks was the minimum recovery period.
I do not believe they had the same surgery. Edler is having by far the least invasive one out of all the options — likely because it's being done so soon after being discovered, rather than waiting for a while like with Lehtonen and Bolland.
Meh, gets Salo into game action and keeps Edler fresh for the playoffs.
So what if we don't finish first in the league.
These are basically my thoughts too, actually. It's not the end of the world, just the whole 'back' thing is the only scary part. If there are no further issues, it shouldn't set the team back too much and our guys like Ballard and Salo will be given a better opportunity to round out their game.
I was looking around, but couldn't find anything concrete...is this at all similar to the back problems Daniel Sedin had a couple of years ago? I know his main problems were back spasms, but I don't recall if he had surgery, and don't think he missed significant time.
