Halfway point, who do you draft?

Just wanted some fans insight on the 2011 draft. I like Couturier because of his size and if he fills out he can definitely add some size and strength to a tiny team. Anybody else have opinions and more knowledge of some of these players?

It's the most open draft in years and unless the Isles are picking at #1, where they ought to take Larsson, I'd actually trade the pick.

Many pundits have said that there are very few guarantees in this draft and that the best player may well be picked a little lower. So if I'm Snow I'd draft Larsson if he's available or I'll move down a few spots and grab whoever I like the most at that point.

I think there'll be great variations on the different teams lists this year, which could lead to some very interesting scenarios.

First choice is Larsson, if he is off the board Landeskog then Hopkins.

Yeah, I wasn't counting larsson cause I didn't anticipate picking first. Interesting thought about trading the pick though. Considering our only shot is through the draft or talent it might be worth a shot to throw in this pick and dish another youngster to get an experienced player (under 35 please!!).

Larsson
Landeskrog
RNH
Hamilton
Siemens

I would try to move up to get Larsson but probably Oil or Devs will take him over a forward if they get the chance.
I do not have a comfortable feeling about deHaan as anything more than a #3. He may only turn out to be Katic ++.

I've read scouting reports say Larsson's got the potential to develop into a franchise d-man,reports that compare Couturier to Jordan Staal,Landeskog to Mike Richards and RNH to Patrick kane. Can we end the idea that the isles ought to trade their 1st because the top talent is somehow mediocre?

Just going by the scouting reports from McKenzie's columns and McGuire from CSB,I'm hoping to see the isles land Larsson. If he's off the board,I'll be happy with RNH.It sounds like his upside could be right up there with Larssons. We'll have to wait until he adds some weight, but that doesn't worry me.Unless a player is totally lazy,I don't see a real problem there.

Larson.

Why?

Or foward corp seems to be better set than our D-corp.

Molson.
JT
KO
Bailey
Nino on the way.
Brock Nelson..maybe 12-13 season?
Frans is a good two-way man.
Grabner?
Konopka is a good role player. A good Richard Park of this team.
Then the wild cards, the two Kirills.

Our d seems to be just a little lacking to me.
DeHaan, Streit, AMac, Hamonic
Then there's a fall off to the next level.

I agree with this. I'm really not a fan of Couturier.

"If I had to hazard a guess on their top four, here's how it goes: (1) Swedish defenceman Adam Larsson, (2) Centre Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, (3) Swedish winger Gabriel Landeskog, (4) centre Sean Couturier. They also really like Niagara IceDogs defenceman Dougie Hamilton, too. The Oilers need a dominant blue-liner more than a centre, but they love Nugent-Hopkins' competitive fire. When he's under the gun to perform, as he was in the world under-18 championship last year — he scored the winning goal in the final — and the top prospects game with scouts galore in the seats, he comes through. Couturier is six-foot-four, but his skating bothers some scouts." (Edmonton Journal)

Well put! Based on our last few years of free agent market failures, the only way we're going to land a top defenseman is to grow our own. Two drafts ago, it was said that the Isles needed a Hedman as much as a Tavares. The following year, we took Niederreiter (I loved the pick, by the way).

So Larsson is a clear top pick, if available. Unless we pick 1st or 2nd, I don't think he will be.

I would skip over forwards Couturier (who's been dropping lately) and Landeskog (RW, where we already have Okposo, Comeau, Grabner, and Niederreiter).

Next defensemen in line are Dougie Hamilton and Duncan Siemens (both big, physical, two-way) and Ryan Murphy (smallish offensive defenseman who reputably can control a game).

That being said, if center RNH is available, I think we've got to jump on him.

RNH
Landeskog
Couturier

If we have the 5th overall pick I say trade it TBH.

For some reason I'm not as big of Landeskog fan as many are here, he just reminds me too much of Bergenheim. No doubt he will be a better scorer than him. Isn't Landeskog hurt right now anyways? if so that's a major red flag for me, as I would stray away from guys who have had injuries (especially concussions, shoulders, knees and wrists).

Right now for me it's:

1.Nugent-Hopkins (stellar playmaking ability, which we don't have, however I would like to see more goal scoring from him)
2.Larsson (NHL ready Size and Strength, would be a great blueline addition to go along with AMac and Hammy)
3.Hamilton (Just feel like this kid is the complete package, has all the tools for the NHL)
4.Couturier (maybe a tad soft for his size, but other than that his offense is hard to ignore)
5. Landeskog (scrappy and tough, though offensive upside worries me)

Notable: Jonathan Huberdeau: I'm a skeptic of him, I look at his numbers as being "inflated" due to playing on a stacked Saint John team.

Trade up to get in first round.
1. Duncan Siemens: could go top 10, a more talented Dylan Mcilrath.
2. Matt Puempel, 2010 CHL rookie of the year, offensively gifted playing on a lousy team, pure goal scorer.
3. Scott Mayfield: A big and tough, but very offensive limited Defenseman
4. David Musil, would be a top 5 a yr ago, but still an interesting prospect.

2nd Round Talent I'm high on
1. Matt Nieto: on BU, doing very well as a Freshman, and producing on the 3rd line
2. Dillon Simpson: North Dakota, could be a solid 2 way NHL defenseman, playing college hockey at age 17, son of former NHL player Craig Simpson, would have 2 full years of CHL eligibility if he chose to leave N. Dakota.
3.Myles Bell: a WHL defenseman some scouts think could go in the 1st round

Late Round Sleepers worthy of a selection round 5-7
1.TJ Tynan: Anders Lee's 5'8" teammate, leading Notre Dame in scoring (38 pts in 29 games)
2. Garrett Noonan: 6'2 BU defenseman, 20 yrs old
3. Alex O'Neil, the agitator who attended Isles kiddie camp and participated in the rookie game vs. boston prospects.

I could go on and on.

I do not want a defenseman!!!! I want Nugent-Hopkins or Couturier.

We need a scoring winger to play along side Tavares because its become clear that Snow/Wang wont go out and get one!

i'd prefer that they get with the program and get a proven winger/centre.
i'd also prefer we get larrson- pretty much as sure a thing as there will be in this draft. sure someone from the draft will one day be better than him (who knows) but right now, you'd have to take him and trust garth and wang to do the right thing.

we absolutely need more scoring punch. our D, while not stellar, when healthy, is competent.

streit-hamonic
amac-martinek
jurcina-eaton
mottau
dehaan?

its our offense that lacks legitimate firepower and grit. nino will help next year, and HOPEFULLLLY we'll sign a top flight veteran scorer to take the pressure off the kids, but we still need some help up front.

for me? based on the limited descriptions ive heard, id take RNH. He seems like the perfect compliment to Tavares, who should be moved to wing. Tavares-RNH-OK seems like a good first line to me.

Larsson seems like a good pick, but im skeptical about taking defensemen early, rarely do they end up as good as advertised...and i know the isles feel that way since they passed on fowler last year. plus it seems easier to pluck defensemen later in the draft. see hamonic.

landy seems like a good hard nosed player we could use...okposo with more scoring?

curtourier seems very similar to tavares, and imo, we dont need another slow footed scorer, we need more complimentary players, id pass on him.

butt wtf do i know, i havent seen any of them play in person and im just reading things off the internet....

Choose the BPA as long as it is not goalie (which it won't be). Do NOT look at the teams depth chart right now. Players get hurt/ don't pan out/change positions/ get traded/leave as FA. Too many factors to draft based on current need. The team is still in shambles and needs the BPA.

I'd actually go for the defenseman. We have to put vets up front of quality to help the kids we have now, not have our older kids mentor our younger one.

If the foreward we too was that good, we could go for it, but if the choice were that simple, we wouldn't be even discussing it. So the d-man would be the pick.

I would just hope we don't rush him.
