But Carcillo brings something that Zherdev does not, a physical presence.

Forget the goals, it is an enigma, but if the guy was truly a legit scoring fwd he would be in the top 9 getting regular minutes and a full time NHL job. Instead he has bounced from team to team and two different leagues.

In all honesty, you can find that elsewhere for cheaper. Clarke would peddle the Carcillo's for draft picks and pick up someone else for a 6th if not off waivers.

Zherdev if course is an enigma, but even if he only gives you two good shifts a game, it's a potentially game-breaking play. Every time the guy gets benched, he has a great week right after it

RT @wyshynski: Last nite Burke said Leafs, Kaberle and his agent were all in a mutually agreed upon silence about deal. Wonder who squealed to Sportsnet.

RT @blogesalming: Brett Lebda is someone you want to trade within your division...

A coach can only go to that particular well with so many times. I just hope it doesn't run dry for us before his time here is out.

Carcillo has been awful all year. Zherdev has made a ton more nice hits this year than Carcillo. All carbomb does is scrap after(or before) the whistle and get penalties. Z is scratched tonight and that saddens me very much. He's a top 9 player. Nodl and Carcillo are NOT.

I don't know. That was a lot to give up for Versteeg. I know he's only 24, but damn, the Flyers just set back the farm system now for another four seasons. You just can't continually draft from the third round and think you're going to hit a home run.

This move basically means the Flyers have all their cards on the table. This is the team they're going to the playoffs with. And I just don't know if the Versteeg move will put them over the top.

The only other thing that I hope is that with all this scratching of Zherdev, that when playoff time rolls around, he becomes the second coming of Leino and tear it up when he gets a chance to play.

I really think Laviolette and company mishandled Zherdev. He was never going to be a defensive force, but damn, he and Richards could have been quite the offensive tandem. I really thought Zherdev was going to be on Mike's wing and I was thinking 35 to 40 goals this year.

The thing is, we don't really need prospects at this point. We have 90% of our roster filled out with proven players, for the next few years. We aren't trying to continuously fill out spots that are a weakness, because we have amazing depth.

And if/when an injury happens, everyone will be happy we have Versteeg.

FOUR seasons? It's a shallow draft, and the Flyers will be drafting very late (25-30) in the first round. Plus we have another 3rd.

I think he is referring to the fact that we will not have drafted in the 1st & 2nd round for the last 4 years (IIRC).

That's assuming they can afford to keep everyone. Can they keep Leino this offseason? Next year JVR and Versteeg are RFA while Coburn and Carle are UFA. They are going to need supplement their expensive contracts with solid prospects on their entry level deals.

The Flyers third is part of the Pronger trade.

Tim P. has some more info on Leino, Zherdev, and Versteeg...

http://www.csnphilly.com/02/15/11/Bo...365&feedID=695

Quote:
Versteeg trickle down

He will be a restricted free agent when his contract expires after next season, which works in the Flyers favor. “Three years in a row we traded our first-round pick, but what are you gonna do?” asked general manager Paul Holmgren. The Flyers will not be able to re-sign Ville Leino not until the off-season, Holmgren said, because of “tagging space.” “But we still intend to re-sign Ville – that hasn’t changed,” he said. Given the rate that Nikolay Zherdev gets scratched, it’s very likely he walks back into free agency this summer. That’s $2 million right there toward re-signing Leino. Holmgren would not bite on that. “We have some options,” he said. However, one NHL source familiar with the Flyers situation said the club will attempt to deal Zherdev by the Feb. 28 trade deadline.

..I can dream lol.

They are probably going to try to deal Zherdev off to Edmonton, which would be awesome lol. That's like sending someone to exile.

^ It could be Jack McIlhargey. He lives in western Canada and scouts for the Flyers in that region.

Zerdev for Brule?
Foster?

Nodl for ??
Carbomb for ??

I always put their names up as trades b/c I auto think we don't have picks to trade - LOL.

Z has been scratched and I'd rather not see Nodl or Carbomb in the Top 9 anymore, makes me sick.

I REALLY liked what I saw from JvR tonight. Getting in the scrap, potting a goal and an assist...he also seemed purely dominant down low and around the boards a few times, really using his size and strength to will himself to the puck. It's something I haven't seen him do in a really, really long time but it's something he has the ability to do consistently when he puts his mind to it...and if he can develop the confidence in that side of his game to bring it every night, he may yet develop into the force he was projected to be.

He might not, of course, but it was there tonight.

The only thing I did not like was the bad penalty sticking his leg out on the tripping call (that could have been dangerous), but other than that I really liked him tonight.

Oh, and on an unrelated tangent, I get more and more tired of Carter every time we play big games and he fails to really produce. Why did he seem insistent on taking bad shots and trying to drag the puck through three-four people by himself? Not only is he sometimes lazy (or 'so skilled it looks effortless' according to some), but some nights he appears to have the hockey IQ of Matt Cooke's chinstrap....

There aren't many bad shots when you have a shot like his. I mostly saw him taking shots through traffic, probably because that's what was there. Worth it to try to surprise a goalie with a shot like his. Also, when Giroux takes a floater in plain sight of the goalie from thirty feet out, no one says anything (which he did once or twice). When Carter takes a snapper through traffic it's a bad shot...

When Briere tries to dangle through their trap, its no big deal (to his credit he succeeded once or twice), when Carter does it, it's a big deal....

C'mon, he had an assist and was a +1 tonight IIRC.
