Morgan Ellis, a poor man's Phaneuf?

http://www.radio-canada.ca/sports/ho...portrait.shtml

Quote:

Wouldn't a poor man's Phaneuf be a different sub species altogether?

I think I qualify as a poor man's Phaneuf and I can't skate backwards or stop very well

I saw him play in Halifax at the beginning of the year. To me, the Phaneuf comparison isn't the best one. Phaneuf throws big open ice hits, is good offensively and can be quite erratic at times. Ellis is more of a stable, tough 1 on 1, good first pass guy with a little offensive upside. Craig Rivet comes to mind - now before people freak out, let's remember that Rivet was quite serviceable in his prime and allowed us to get Gorges and Pacioretty. Ellis might even be a better all around D than Rivet if he develops well. I see him being a good #3-4-5 d-man if all goes well.

Then again, I played against Bruno Gervais and Alexandre Picard in junior and they were both rock solid d-men that never made mistakes. Now in the NHL they can't hold a spot because they make too many mistakes. Ellis could just as easily end up like this.

Had him on my list for the draft. I'm also convinced that this guy will play in the NHL one day. I'd go as far as to think that it's already a done deal.

I don't see the Rivet comparison. Rivet put up some very good offensive numbers in junior.

I think Mark Eaton is closer to Ellis' upside.

If this is the case then his Cape Breton team must be absolute crap considering he has average numbers and is a -26

I only saw him once, wasn't overly impressed but funny cause when I did see him I thought of Rivet.

Poor man's Phaneuf?! Hmmm interesting. I always pictured him as a more physical Gorges. If Ellis thinks he can, to some degree, bring the same kind of offensive flair that Dion used to, then more power to him I suppose

Can you explain why ? because it's a big statement. I don't know him alot so is it becaue of a booming shot ? positioning ? maturity ? skating ? physical package ? his game will translate well in the NHL ?

He plays big minutes on a crappy team...+- doesn't reflect his defensive skill.

He reminds me a lot of Gorges but a big bigger and a bit more mobile...but same smarts and intangibles. He may never be a top 4 guy but at worse he will be a regular NHLer...IMHO one of the safer picks in the draft.

Best case is Ryan Suter/Dennis Seidenberg style #3 guy. Worst case is a character depth guy like Sopel.

You seem to have seen him play, how is his slapshot ? it could be a good component, because in the NHL an average offensive dman + a good point shop can become a pretty productive player.

I have seen him play Moncton. He is on a horrible team in the Eagles, but is solid. He plays PK, 5 on 5, PP etc... is their captain at 18 and is a quality defender. He doesn't have a great shot or anything but is solid on the blue line. The fact that he is the captain at 18 stuck out, even on a bad Eagles team, that means something.

I wonder if someone will make a Phaneuf vs. MAB thread on the leafs board and show how you can afford 10 MAB's with the cost of 1 Phaneuf
