Sabres likely to start next season in Germany/Russia

Quote:
Vanek, in an interview on his Web site, expanded on the rumors that have Buffalo starting next season in Europe. Hes heard the Sabres would spend 10 days in Mannheim, Germany, play the season opener there, then travel to St. Petersburg, Russia, to face Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals.

"What Ive heard, its a good chance were going over there," Vanek said Wednesday. "Its just speculation with what weve heard here. If its true itd be great."

Bleh, we lose home games, the early part of the schedule gets messed up, and the guys get subject to a lot of extra travel early on.

Lose. Lose. Lose.

Mostly it's a bad thing. However, it could be a good early season team bonding experience - especially if we have some new faces next year. But overall, I'd rather have them stay home.

Dear Christian Ehrhoff:

Would you like to play some NHL games in Germany? If so, please sign with the Sabres.

Thanks,

Zip

It's probably excellent news for all our Sabres fans overseas.

I figured Vanek declined an All-Star invite.

Not a big fan of going overseas...

Instead, they get a de facto home game in St Pete. YAY!

Good point.

A lot can change in the next 5 months or so until the schedule comes out though.

well, for fans in Germany, hopefully that part of it happens. I didn't like it at first, but it would be cool for the team and the fans over there.

Awards:
These sort of trips have usually proven rough for the participants early in the season. I'm not sure what the benefit is to the team, other than getting a marketing op overseas. Exposure is one thing, but this doesn't seem like a reward or bonus situation in any regard.
