Who is the Caps best player right now?

ok, so...really. who is the caps best player these last couple of months? i just thought about that for a second and an answer didn't immediately materialize and the next thought was ,"wow".

Since December Ovechkin has 9 goals. Knuble has 9 goals. Is Semin the team's best player ?

Who is the team's best defensive player? Alzner? Hannan?

Has Varly been the team's best player?

If we are talking forwards, there have been several games where I thought Mojo was the best Cap on the ice, but if we're talking team-wide, I'd have to go with Varly. Considering the state of the offense, it really is up to the D and G to win games and without Varly in net, that would be a much more difficult task.

thats just so funny. true perhaps, but funny. half the nhl(fans and pundets) think the caps need a goalie while he may be the most reliable player on the team. if its not him, then it might be the other goalie.

Matt Hendricks for me. The guy brings it every night.

Some stats for Varly:

GAA: 2.14 (4th in the NHL)

SV%: .928 (3rd in the NHL)

If the guy hadn't been hurt (and the team were winning more games), we'd be very possibly looking at a Vezina finalist.

realistically that vezina finalist spot remains in play, if he can make it work. the caps need to win more games. tonight he needs to beat roloson(is he even playing? is he tweaked again?)

if the caps have a strong stretch run and varly keeps those rankings there, he might well earn that spot.

Another interesting stat that I found while doing some legwork on a thread in the trade forum is that the Caps are allowing a league-leading 1.56 GA/G over their last 18 games. I can't imagine anyone could have predicted that at the start of the year.

I agree with hockey442 in that my vote for the best defenseman is for Alzner. Granted, I've always been a big fan of his, but he's really playing well. He doesn't draw the oooh's and ahhh's like Carlson, but he also doesn't leave drop passes at the blueline and get twisted around while defending odd-man rushes. Maybe I'm just a bigger fan of defensive defensemen. As he keeps filling out his frame, he's only going to get better too. You also can't forget the beard.

Varly has been reaping the benefits of a more aggressive scheme. He has been playing very well though. But he is not stealing games. Still enough to probably be our MVP though. We need him to win games now, and its just not happening as often as we need it.

I think Ovechkin with no wristers nor whiskers is still close to our best player since all other teams still swarm to him. Proof is in the pudding.

Honorable mentions, Alzner Semin and the old Man.

Its still Ovechkin. hes not the best player in the league anymore but hes still our best player. Gotta like what we have seen from varly and our D.

Count my vote for hendricks, hes not the most talented player the team, but by far the most consistant on the team night in and out.

Hendricks bless his heart gets the hardest worker bee award. His offensive skills still impress me though. Bruce needs to tell his defensemen to not force Hendricks into covering the pinch in. He sucks playing as a defensemen.

Mike Green. Yeah he's made some bad plays, but he's also stepped it up of late and made some pretty good plays.

I'm kind of leaning towards Green also at this point.

Varlamov has played well no doubt but these days you can say that for anyone they throw in the net.

I'd go with Knuble...

Fought through serious early season injuries.

Jacks up and calls out his mates in the locker room (24/7)

Many games he's asked to play on and "jump start" 3, or even all 4 lines.

Fought through his own scoring slump (as well as playing through Backstrom and Ov's current slump) to be right at his historic totals.

Takes a beating on the wall and in front of the goal most every game

...hope he inks to another year soon!

Varlamov, and, to borrow an oft-used HF phrase, it's not even close.

King Karl followed closely by Varly. Hendricks brings the effort all the time but his top game still isn't as individually impactful to the outcome as either of those guys.

Great (fantastic night in and night out): Varlamov

Solid (reliable on most nights, fantastic on some): Hendricks, Green, Alznerson, Hannan

Wild Card (makes an impact but only sometimes): MaJo

The Brilliant D+ Students (Lots of potential but vastly underachieving, still passable though): Ovy and Backstrom

The rest are kinda invisible. This is how I see it lately, it doesn't answer who's the best but who's been performing for us.

Yeah, I made that point when Capsman said the defense wasn't even that good right now.

If you mean strictly "right now," Varlamov works I guess. If you mean more in a "this season" sense I have trouble giving it to him, since Neuvirth was basically an MVP for the first month+.

Overall I guess I give it to Alzner. Green has been good, but not in the way he's expected to be. Carlson's been very good as well but to me has looked more like a rookie than Alzner at times (although both have their share of those moments).

Love what I see from Hendricks, but he isn't good enough defensively for me to call him "best." MoJo has been great in his way but again, still looking like a rookie.

What's staggering is the amount of losses they've racked up while leading the league defensively over that recent stretch. That's the takeaway. The offense has not simply been off; it's completely dried up.

Take your pick of either goalie, everyone else is under performing massively.
