The Rangers have more prospects and young roster players than they will have positions moving forward. The organization knows its' own players better than anyone else and likely has a strong opinion on who is a top prospect and who isn't. If the Rangers can swing the right deal, Kaberle is the way to go. We can worry about the summer during the summer.
I think at some point we're going to see a deal that packages a few quality up-and-comers for someone who's more established and is on a team that has hit the skids. However, I don't think it will be done this year. I think they'll wait it out unless the right deal comes along. Who knows? Maybe you'll run into a situation where a guy like Erik Johnson becomes available and you can offer up a significant package and still absorb the cost effectively.
Kaberle, in my opinion, just doesn't fit the bill for this team due to his age.

only scenario i could see the rangers having interest is a drury + a pick for souray deal so edmonton can buyout drury and the rangers bury souray in hartford and avoid the dead cap space.
that type of deal isn't happening but only scenario souray makes any sense.
“He’s had problems with his wrist (Montreal) and he’s broken his hand ... I don’t think he shoots the puck like he used to,” said one NHL team executive who saw him play in Hershey this past winter.
Sather is tight with Souray's agent Paul Theofanous. I wouldn't be surprised if the Rangers invite Souray on a tryout to camp after Edmonton buys him out as a favor to the agent. The Rangers will be looking to add a vet D on the cheap.
Quote:
Bryan McCabe, the rental for whom the Rangers sent a third-rounder to the Panthers on Feb. 26, will be free to leave on July 1, so the Blueshirts will be in the market for a veteran defenseman.
They will not, however, be in the bank-breaking mode to get one.
could see him being the vet invite to camp on a tryout basis if he were free by than... easily fits that mold. Sather always invites some vet like that to camp
No way the Rangers want Souray for anything than a million dollar contract if Edmonton buys him (which is unlikely). I would even be against that. We don't need Souray. Give MDZ a chance. If he can't hold his own, I would rather trade for someone decent instead of wasting money and space on Sour.

I dont have any problem with Kaberles age, the question IMO is how worn out he is.
But him being 33 would only be a asset to this team. You need a mix and unless worn out he'll have 3-4 more years left.
I am not overly worried about his play in Boston either. It takes time for a D to settle in. He had a free role in Toronto, and is forced to play a small role in Bos and to keep things simpler. It's pretty tough.
But there are of course questionmarks as regards if he has it in him to give NEW YORK a go.

much rather get a Bieksa or Pitaknen type dman, a dman who plays with grit from time to time.
Kaberle is too soft and would get run over and booed here like he was Tom Poti.
Don't want Kaberle. He's on the downswing at this point in his career and is only going to get worse. He's not what he was even 5 years ago. He still picks up a lot of assists partly due to PP time, but he's never had a great shot and his other skills are starting to go. Plus he's never been physical.
Souray, I could see the team taking a chance on for a very small amount, but otherwise I'd say absolutely not. He's a below average defenseman, penalty prone and poor in positioning, BUT he does give snarl and has arguably the best slap shot in the game when healthy (it's between him and Chara). He'd be the replacement for McCabe. Valentenko would replace Gilroy, and that would give the Rangers two GREAT shots on the PP units. MDZ can work on the finer points of his game in CT and dominate the AHL for an extended time to prove he's ready, and if Souray gets hurt at any point (likely) he'd be the first one up.
But only for a cheap deal (<1M) since Souray has basically become damaged goods at this point. Too busy going after Jarome Iginla to take care of his own health. If they do acquire him, one of the first things Tortorella should tell him is to pick his spots with fighting. I don't advocate that often, but he's gotten more than a couple of his injuries out of fights, usually out of overaggression (not getting knocked out), but still. Let someone else be the "enforcer" or just go with team toughness.
By all accounts Souray could not hold on to a roster spot in Edmonton--worst team in the league and struggled the whole year in the AHL. Sather might like reclamation projects but there's nothing to reclaim here. He's done. There will be tons of 5-7 NHL defenseman to choose from come August and who will sign cheap just to have a home. Beyond that the Rangers could sign a Pitakanen, Bieksa, Erhoff depending on how the RFA's go and/or Richards signs or not. No need for Sourary. No use for Souray. He's not even close to the player he was two, three years ago and he wasn't great then.
The Rangers have zero need to invest a long term contract on a free agent defenseman. Not with the amount of young D on the roster and in the system. No need to block the path of a cheaper and younger player with a rich free agent contract.
The cap is going to increase by $4M plus for next season and there are going to be some stupid contracts handed out in 16 days.
The only way I would see this happening is he is a tryout for camp, signs for a mill or under and is only used on the pp with Richards setting him up for the bomb. BUT I personally would rather have Vtank letting them loose from the point. Other than that, NO WAY!!!
I hope it is not us but someone is going to sign the guy for 1 yr at a million max to be their 6th Dman and PP specialist. He can still rip it I am sure.
this guy is done. he struggled last year in hershey. everyone who saw him play said the same thing. done. over. finished.
hes banged up. skates like a sloth and would not be an upgrade anywhere. i would rather vtank or ktek play than to have this guy stealing money from us.
just because he would play on the cheap doesnt mean we should sign him. just another clearance table reject.
sheldon souray is wade redden with a slightly better slapshot.
I want no part of Souray. He couldn't even hack it in Hershey, so what the heck is he going to do in the NHL? He's a lockerroom cancer, a defensive trainwreck, and an injury waiting to happen. The fact that the Oilers couldn't even trust him on their farm team is another indictment against him. Say what you want about Redden, but he at least seems to be a good soldier when it comes to not poisioning the well in CT. I don't even want him in camp if he gets bought out. We can find another vet dman to push our youngsters in camp. We don't need Souray and all his baggage.
