Center to Buffalo (the reboot)

As much as I appreciate the intent of the "young center with 1st line potential" thread, it deals with a target Buffalo doesn't currently have the assets for. They certainly have a glaring need for a center, but they can't afford guys like Ganger, Stepan, etc.

Anyway, a more accurate need for the Sabres would be any top nine pivot, because at the moment here's how things look down the middle:
Adam
Hecht
Gaustad
Nieds/McCormick

Connolly on IR but back before the end of the year.

Gaustad has had like three good weeks, McCormick's a good checker, but isn't enough, Niedermayer is old and slow, Hecht can't play center with a brace on his hand and Adam isn't even a season removed from Juniors. Tim Connolly is their only real scoring pivot left, and he's currently getting his nose reconstructed and has continued his putrid playoff performance when in the lineup.

Basically, I'm looking at three types of players here:
  • Overpaid vets that would allow Buffalo to move some of its salary on the wings in a change of scenery type deal.
  • Prospects who are NHL ready but are so buried on the depth chart that they don't have a realistic shot of leapfrogging guys.
  • Young vets who have falllen down the depth chart but still have some upside left and need a fresh start. Sort of like a center version of Latandresse.
  • Pretty much any young center with stalled development that for whatever reason doesn't fit the second two criteria, just for BGM.

Preferably, I'd like a dude who has the defensive/forechecking wherewithal to at least hold down a third line role next season, but at this point, even a top six or bust type of guy could find a home. The Sabres are seriously that hurting down the middle right meow.

Oh, and if Cogliano is starting to get his Todd Marchant-sans-faceoffs thing going on, and is actually playing a decent game at center, what would his value be?

Jochen Hecht contract for contract. Parked car infered a bad winger contract for a bad center contract.

I'd do that, I don't think Calgary has the incentive to, unless they really don't like Jokinen.

And I'm not hating on your thread or anything, even though there seems to be no perceived hostilities.

The problem with this and the other thread is the idea that the Sabres are actually going to be doing something this year. The ideas on the actual Sabres board of moving expiring contracts for young, stalled players, like Jack Skille, makes much more sense.

Skille is RW though maybe our strongest position.

That would be a no, from Calgary.

Read the OP. They're involved in this thread too.

As a young stalled player,( some already call him a bust) What would it cost for Zach Hamill to get a change of scenery?

As I said in the other thread Dustin Jeffrey could be a viable option if the Sabres take that route. I'm just reposting what I wrote in the other thread.

From what I've read from people who have watched him in the minors this year he's playing about as complete a game as anyone could ask for, and the WBS beat reporter Jon Bombulie recently said that he's not sure that there was a better player at that level overall. This guy really knows his stuff so I don't take that comment lightly.

He's never going to be a particularly strong hitter by any means, but I think he's in the mold of the new age third line centers that are solid defensively while still able to chip in a decent amount of points. He's a stud on the PK with a number of short handed goals to his credit at the AHL level coming as a result of his strong hockey IQ. He's not a burner, but he seems to have improved his skating the past couple years enough that he will never be called slow either.

I personally would like Pittsburgh's management to find him a permanent place in the lineup, but if Malkin isn't able to make the switch to wing, it will be hard enough to find Letestu a spot in the top nine who has shown he has the goods to be a more than capable third line center in his own right. Barring a move to wing for either Jeffrey or Letestu, Jeffrey is likely to be buried in Pittsburgh and I have to think that Shero would be looking to flip him for a winger if the right trade came along.

Todd White. He is a veteran center and his contract expires at the end of the year. He does not cost much.

i think it's fair value...

late 1st rounder (Pysyk) who fills an organizational need for a future top pairing defensemen.
Chris Butler, a young but veteran 24 yr old defensemen
and a 2nd rounder...

fair offer... might not be enough

Cogliano.

Either a defensive center, pick, or prospect defenceman?

Its too much IMO... I'm not sure how the Islanders would value Bailey but thats a good return. I think we could get more for that package actually.

Brule would be an interesting player from the Oilers actually. A reclimation project that could probably be had for little return.

Phoenix needs Montador. We can't help with a center, but I'd be happy to toss you a second rounder or two that you could flip for your center.

I know thats not realistic but Id like that David Desharnais get his chance somewhere.

40 pts in 32 games in the AHL I think.

He's a sick playmaker.

I would guess that would have to start with Kassian, right? Maybe even Pysyk, too.

Gerbe-Jeffrey doesn't seem fair to the Pens.

Is there any chance Phoenix would trade Martin Hanzal? He's a player I'd like a lot on the Sabres.

I'm probably not his biggest fan, but I'd start with Stafford +

Yeah, but neither does Stafford-Jeffrey unless the pick is a second.

Both Jeffrey and Gerbe are first line AHL scorers with questions about how their game transitions to the NHL, but Gerbe at least looked good last season, especially in the playoffs. He's been the same guy this season, but like almost everyone in Buffalo, he can't find the back of the net. Even though he's small, he plays a really scrappy, tough game and I think he'd be a decent fit with Malkin. Even if he can't cut the Pens top six, he's a good forechecker and would be a useful agitator to go along with Talbot, Cooke, etc.
