Stars sign Henri Kiviaho to ELC

Kiviaho ELC... Didnt expect that but okay

Quote:
Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill announced today that the club has signed goaltender Henri Kiviaho to a three-year entry level contract. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Kiviaho, 20, split the season between KalPa of Finland's SM-Liiga and their Junior A program. In the SM-Liiga, he appeared in 13 games recording a 2.92 goals against average and a .881 save percentage. In three postseason games, he posted a 4.24 goals against average and a .843 save percentage.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound native of Lappeenranta, Finland was selected by Dallas in the fifth round (144th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft.

If Takko believed in his talent 2 years ago, why wouldn't he now? If we excuse the stats of Campbell in his early post-draft years we can do the same for Kiviaho.

From Hockey's Future:

Quote:
Once again assisted by Finland-based goaltending instructor Mikko "Elmo" Eloranta, Hockey's Future takes a look at the pool of goalie prospects.

"As you can see, there is not so much to tell," Eloranta said. "Goalies like Saros, Husso and Korpisalo, the.future is looking good but (they will) need like 2-4 years . The rest of the guys are good backup goalies and that is it."
Quote:
4. Henri Kiviaho, 19, KalPa Kuopio/KalPa U20
NHL Rights: Dallas Stars
Drafted 5th round, 144th overall, 2012

The season has not gone as well as expected in Kuopio as both the Liiga team and it's A Juniors squad have struggled, so Kiviaho's numbers are somewhat inflated.

With the club in last place in Liiga, KalPa has loaned several of its top players to other clubs, including veteran goalie Pekka Tuokola who is now playing in Sweden. With Tuokola gone, Kiviaho has been splitting the goaltending duties with Antti Ore. Kiviaho is 1-10-0 in 11 games with a 2.94 goals-against and .883 save percentage.

He had a 3.44 goals-against and .890 save percentage in 25 games for KalPa's A junior squad, which is 13th in the 16-team SM junior league.

"He's a big goalie. It's a bad team so his goalie stats are bad also," Eloranta said

Yeah I didn't see this coming but he certainly can't be as bad as Legace so he stays in Europe for 3 years, not a big deal but maybe he finds his game and blooms as time goes on. I am neither for or against this contract.

He's already signed a one year contract with KalPa.

The team has three goalies under contract, but one is 18 year old Tuukka Smura who will likely playe in the U20 I assume.

Oh damn ..... he's not going to be playing much at all.

The other goalie they signed is Eero Kilpeläinen, a 5th round pick of the Dallas Stars in 2003. He's a legit, elite starting goalie in Europe. He finished as the top goalie in Finland once or twice, and he spent some time in Switzerland last year.

The guy regularly plays close to 50 games, and I think they only play 60 in Liiga.

Also, the new guy received a 3 year deal so they're going to be committed to making it work.

Hopefully KalPa can find a Mestis team that will allow some spot starts for Kiviaho. He's too old to take any U20 games like he did last year.

yep, 60 game season. Kilpeläinen will most likely play ~45 games, which means Kiviaho plays the remaining 15 or so games. Could see a few games in Mestis (second highest mens league). SaPKo being the most likely team destination for KalPa player loans

He isn't ready for a starting role in FEL yet

100degree hockey brought up an interesting thought. Maybe he goes to Idaho? Robinson would then back up Campbell.

He always speculates on signing like that. I think he might have said the same thing about Lindell even.

I'd would guess no. Before he signed the KalPa deal I'm sure both he and Dallas were already talking.

Wasn't expecting that at all, but ok.

Hey ... maybe Dallas will draft his lil forward teammate so we can have 3 draft picks playing for KalPa next year!

I'm in the same boat the is surprised, but I'm thinking along the same lines as piqued about the scouts.

The only difference is I would focus on Valley and Takko. The two of them probably played a major role in the decision, and it's pretty difficult to evaluate the worst team in Liiga by a long shot. Hopefully he and the team are better next year.

Hell hopefully 100 is right. I doubt he'd be in NA next year, but maybe playing with Lagace in the ECHL would be better than a poor Liiga team.

How they handle all these contracts will be interesting. I wonder if Payne or Winther still get a contract now. We know Holland loves Winther. Maybe like Faksa he just needs to put junior behind him.

I believe Winther just had surgery FWIW.

You want at least 3 real goalie prospects in the org. at any time. Lagace is veering toward non-prospect status based on poor performance. I'm guessing they view Kiviaho more favorably and want him as that 3rd guy coming in behind JC/Desrosiers on the depth chart.

I looked up Mrazek who we just saw in the Grand Rapids series. The comparison isn't very good since he was drafted out of the OHL, but he's a Euro goalie who was playing pro for the Wings 2 years after his draft, so who knows, that might be an option for Kiviaho if they don't think he's going to get enough time behind ol' Eero (who I still don't totally understand why the Stars never signed and brought over here, even later on as a sort of Nilstorp type project).

Seems like we're going to have a log-jam at goaltender with Nilstorp, Campbell, and Desrosiers all lighting it up right now. I would hope that we could showcase one of them next season for trade bait.

Desrosiers will still be in the Q, and it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't resign Nihlstorp and rolled with Campbell/Robinson in the AHL.

I vaguely remember reading in local media that Nihlstorp is not interested in resigning and will return to Europe next season. Maybe the recent CAlder Cup run has changed things for him, but I don't think he'd sign for anything other than a one-way, and it's doubtful he'd be getting that...
