I believe Dallas could should use a signing bonus to keep the cap hit as low as possible. Artificially inflating the cap hit this year to give him more money would increase the cap hit throughout the life of the contract.
With the way I formed Year 1 with the signing bonus, he'd actually make more money than Tavares this season. Tavares is only getting $2.439 million of this salary compared to $2.720 to Benn.
When you compare the contracts in the final 5 years though, Benn is making $28.5 million to Tavares making $29 million.
Dallas gets a slightly smaller cap hit in this scenario but Benn gets nearly identical money as Tavares.
Well he does have to come back from overseas as well. So guess it all go down next week on contract negotiations. Thanks for the info, i haven't gotten around to reading on the agreement.
All you need to know is that he played in Germany for a little bit. He flew back to Canada before Christmas for the holidays and because his grandfather wasn't doing well. Based off of his Twitter he's still in Victoria, BC. GMJN and Gaglardi have both talked about how he is in the very long term plan. I'd expect negotiations to start once the CBA is finalized (probably Wed) and for it to go very fast. I bet they have an announcement on Friday.
Seems like the most reasonable answer. Plus, I could see Dallas being more willing to give a signing bonus now meaning Benn earns a greater percentage of his salary.
Benn and his side may not even be considering a signing bonus, it's just something that makes sense to me. It's something that seems like a player and his agent would push for now to minimize the impact of missing half the season.
I dont think he has earned anywhere near 7 million. The Stars may have alot of room but it would be foolish to go tossing money around. The comparable players say he is worth around 5.5 on a long term deal.

I wouldn't put anything past any of the players now. They'll be asking for outlandish money... Again.

Yeah I really like the Tavares comparison. I always was a bit concerned about every damn member of the front office throwing around the franchise player tag. That's something his reps can point to and ask for more money potentially.
That argument doesn't hold as much water when you point to Tavares. They are equally as important to their team as the other. Not saying they are equal players, but their level of importance is fairly similar.

But the point after that is the key to him not getting $7 million.
I don't see how his reps can reasonably say he's worth $9 million more than Tavares (all things equal and they both end up on 6 year deals.
If his side is adamant Benn is a $7 million player, they'll go after a bridge contract. They don't have much of a leg to stand on for that price right now.

Wasn't I flamed earlier in the offseason for making this comparison?
There's no justification for 7M. They use the franchise player label, use Tavares' contract. His play so far? Tavares again, or even Eberle. 6M is the absolute highest he should be getting paid.

Of course it doesn't make sense, but it's the NHL and horrible contracts are handed out all the time. I'd give him Eberle money.
I dare you watch this video and not smile from beginning to end. This is newer, posted 2 months ago, and starts with some footage of a very young Jamie Benn.
