Well of course that's what he wants. That's how he maximizes his earnings if his career continues on course. It's the Stars' job to not let that happen.

Send a message via ICQ to ginblossoms
if at some discount, i wouldn't be completely against a 4-yr deal to ufa status. benn doesn't seem like a hard-bargaining type of guy (unless his agent is a scott boras - drew rosenhaus type), and the stars would presumably have first dibs to extend him.

we all know how good benn is now and what he seems to be projecting to, but you never know. signing to too long a term poses risks to the organization, too.

I don't mean that he wants to hit UFA for the sake of getting paid. Maybe he wants it for the chance to be paid by someone else.

Even if that's the case, Piqued's point still stands.

On an entitled fan note though I would really hope that's not the case.

There isn't anything the Stars can do to prevent it if that's what he really wants.

Well, I don't think that's what he wants.

I think this is about owners colluding and instructing their GMs to take a hard line on these bigger name RFAs. It's why you won't see any offer sheets to RFAs for a while.

Unless he wants to try and get a payday four years from now without playing a game between now and then there sure as hell is. As of now there's no reason to think Benn has soured on the organization or anything of that nature. These are pretty normal RFA negotiations, the only thing abnormal is the freshness of the CBA and the immediacy of the coming season. Your conjecture that he might not want to be here after four years has no bearing in reality. Be that as it may, if the organization really feels he's not a "lifer" then they really can play hardball because they own his privilege of getting on the ice against NHL competition.

This is just business and it will get done. I'll feel a lot better once its a done deal though.

Since there is no news, let's speculate a bit. How would you react if Joe inks him to an 8 year deal? (I know it doesn't make much since, but I'm bored).

It may not be official news, but a local media member with ties to the team and a national media member have said Benn seems to have no interest in signing that deal. In fact, one (Bob Sturm) already mentioned Joe may have offered that, IIRC.

I really wouldn't be upset if they signed him at 8 for $48-$52.

Would prefer the max if he doesn't accept the bridge, which he won't.

Heika weighs in with some comparable from both sides.

http://starsblog.dallasnews.com/2013...tiations.html/

I personally found this interesting:

Quote:
Still, just about every case the Stars can make, Evans can come back with one of his own. The Stars can hold up the three-year bridge contract given to Claude Giroux at $3.75 million a year, and Benn’s camp can come back with the three-year bridge contract given to Jeff Carter at $5 million a year. The Stars can offer up Mikko Koivu’s second deal at four years for $3.25 million, but the Benn camp can counter with Bobby Ryans’ deal for five years at $5.1 million.
If the Benn camp is willing to take that, I don't know how the Stars say no. Maintaining his RFA status is paying more than you'd prefer on a 2nd contract.

I didn't explain my point well enough.

LeBrun isn't a rumor monger and Bob Sturm actually has ties to the organization, both are saying long term offers are on the table and Benn doesn't want it. I'm saying tacking on extra years wouldn't make this situation any better if that information is correct.

Given the option of what Benn is potentially asking for (a contract to take him right to free agency) and him singing a max deal, of course the majority of us would want to see him inked for 8 years. Unless the info out there changes, that just doesn't seem realistic.

The question is does Heika actually know that's happened. He's probably just spitting out situations and speculating. Just can't see Benn taking the bridge.

Well a 6 year deal like what Eberle and Tavares got might be on the table and that's probably what's been reported on. An 8 year deal might not be. That could be more appealing to Benn just because of the sheer amount of money and security that would provide.

Yeah ... I'd hate that to be the final number, but if Carter's deal was on the table from Benn's side, that's one you'd have to strongly consider.

That's a great starting point if it's true though. I never considered Carter, and his stats actually do compare quite well to Benn. Carter got that contract before he blew up for 46 goals. Before that, he only broke 20 goals twice and 50 points once.

Benn has three 20 goal seasons and a 50 and 60 point season.
