Sather is listening to offers for Marian Gaborik

In today's Dreger Report:

Quote:
2) Several NHL teams admit to being in the market for an impact forward...a top six player with an offensive flare.

For obvious reasons, these players are seldom available in-season and traditionally, trades including high-end forwards require weeks of negotiating to work out all of the elements.

Among the big names potentially available - New York's Marian Gaborik might draw some interest in the days leading up to the deadline.

The Rangers aren't shopping Gaborik, who has struggled this season with just 16 goals in 42 games after scoring 42 last year, but word around the league is Rangers GM Glen Sather is willing to listen to offers.

Gaborik agreed to a five-year contract with the Rangers last July and earns $7.5 million per year.

Clearing Gaborik's salary would go a long way in creating flexibility this summer when New York faces a wave of key restricted free agents including Ryan Callahan, Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov, Brian Boyle and Matt Gilroy.

The Rangers will also have to invent cap space if signing Brad Richards as an unrestricted free agent this summer is a priority.

You know, in the past I would have said good luck moving that contract.

But given he was able to dump Gomez and Roszival for decent value...I think he actually could. Gaborik has more value than those two guys as well.

Terrible at signing contracts, but good at making trades.

Dean Lombardi,

DO IT!

Sincerely,
Every Kings fan who's sick of seeing this pathetic offensive team not put up goals for our goalies.

Keep in mind before people go making proposals that Gaborik does have a NTC.

What exactly would the Rangers be looking for in Return for Gabby?

Wonder if the sens would bite on this.. seeing as we've been looking for a solid sniper to put on Spezza's wing.. even though his contract is a little scary.. the sens have a lot of cap space to work with this off-season.

I never knew Gaborik's cap hit was 7.5 mill, for some reason I thought it was ~5 mill. Still, it's probably better to keep him at least until the summer.

Honestly I as a Rangers fan I would want 1st +2nd + Moller.

Moller is a great prospect and Gaborik is signed for 3 more years so I don't think thats too much?

How would kings fans feel about that.

No offense, but it would take a lot more than a 1st + Hickey/Teubert/Moller.

Like it was said in the previous Gaborik to LA thread, something based around Schenn + Simmonds is more reasonable in value.

As a Kings fan, I would do it.

I would think that even for Gaborik, the Kings would do whatever they could to not trade Schenn.
Even if it meant adding multiple prospects and picks.

I want Gaborik in Montreal, but only if Sather takes Kostitsyn and Spacek off of our hands (cap space).

If not, I can really see Pittsburgh making an effort to land Gaborik to play on Crosby's wing.

People need to realize Schenn goes nowhere.

1st + 2nd + Moller? Is that a joke? We won't move Gaborik for such a low-ball offer.

Schenn + Forbort + 1st. Yeah, it's a lot, but this is Marian Gaborik we're talking about.

For some strange reason I dont see DL giving up that much for a guy he could have had for free.

I still see Gabby as an elite talent in the league. AO has 20 goals Gabby has 16, both are having down years, Rangers aren't just going to dump Gabby off cheap.

I'd want Shenn, Hickey and 1st for Gabby and a 2nd. It's a steep price but IMO Gabby is still one of the top 5-6 talents in the league. AO, Crosby, Malkin and now Stamkos being the only players surely more talented then him.

Would work for one year. Then in the summer, they'd have to jettison a ton of salary just to field a complete team. They are at 51+M already for next year without adding 7.5M for Gaborik.
