Chris Phillips to Boston

Nick Kypreos was on with Andrew Krystal & Dan Dunleavy (FAN 590) this morning and they asked him if he had heard any hot trade rumours. Nick said that the one rumour that he keeps hearing over and over from numerous sources is Chris Phillips to Boston.

Yes!!!!!! This is exactly what the Bruins need, another shut down D-man who is having a career low year who has a whopping 4 points in 54 games.

Phillips and Kaberle.

Surely they can't be looking at both? They are two very different defensemen, so which one is it?

With Savard done for the season and his cap hit of the books it now works cap wise. You can have him for Min 2nd rounder.

If boston wanted him it would only take a 2nd rounder. So since he's not with boston now, its because its not true or Boston has the agreement in place already and their just waiting on the trigger so the sens eat up more cap space.

But if Chris comes to boston... forget kabby coming or a PMD I'd say. And if chia is talking about bringing a "star" player with TO's 1st to Boston it must be a forward and ottawa has got a few of those. Alfy, spezza, etc.

WTF do the B's need Spezza for? Alfy would NEVER return a pick like TO's first. The only player on the Sens roster that could pry it away is Karlsson.

He's a 20-25 point defensemen when he plays on teams that aren't broken. Not saying that's what you need....but use a little context when you look at numbers.

Yeah this has been mentioned by Dreger, the FAN like you mentioned, nhlrumor, and even Eklund, all kinds of different people, but does it really make sense? I don't think Boston really needs an older guy like Phillips to be honest.

Or they're getting several 2nd round type offers and are waiting for someone to up the anti.

Ottawa won't trading for another top 1st rounder....despite what people think we aren't blowing the team up, we're just going to insert 2 more top D prospects and hopefully the lottery pick with a couple other young players. A new coach and a fresh start will be Ottawa's most important move for the start of next season.

You do realize that ripping on a stay at home, defensive, shut down Dman who is on a team that is globally having their worst seasons of their career in a **** system for having 4 points makes about as much sense as ripping on a first line center for not having enough blocked shots?

He's 33. He's been there. He's been there beside Chara. Chia knows Phillips well.

Are worse teammates the reason he has fewer points than Matt Carkner?

He's having a terrible year. That's all there is to it. Could he get better? Maybe. Has he done better before? Of course. But he's been terrible this year.

Really don't understand why Phillips would interest them, they need a mobile d man. Kaberle would be a great fit there...but hey I guess thats why we're not part of management on an NHL team.. Who knows but it'll definitely be a head scratcher if he does end up going there.

Carkner takes the easiest assignments while Phillips takes the hardest ones alongside a 20 year old who is the smallest defensemen in the NHL on a team that is pinned in their own end always. That one point difference is pretty negligible.

Phillips is completely in over his head trying to lead Ottawa defensively...but look at the surroundings.

Whether it's for a 1st or future consideration, I'm not going to talk about the value coming or going, but having Phillips in Boston will make The Bruins a better team. He's a top 4 NHL D man, he's able to play against other teams best forwards night in and night out, and the fact of the matter is this current NHL season as worn everyone out mentally and Phillips is no exception especially considering he is in his contract year.

If The Bruins nab Phillips, they become the favorites in The East IMO. What puts them ahead of Philly will be the goaltending but Phillips will give Boston a defence just as good as Philly.

Don't look at the stupid stats with Phillips, look at the last decade. He still has a ton of foot speed, still has the ability to shut down the other teams best forwards, and has a ton of experience. Put him in Julian's system where all 3 forwards are supporting the D and Phillips and Chara will be the best tandom in The NHL.

There's no arguing that, Phillips is having a horrible year. But having watched him his whole career as a pro, he tends to play poorly when he takes on too much as a player. It's in Chris' character to do everything he can to help his team win, especially when times are tough. He's trying to do too much right now and it's not within his skill set to be a #1 on the backend. Hence the horrible numbers this year. Phillips will thrive in any other situation though, logging big minutes against the other team's best forwards as a premier shutdown defenseman. He's battle tested and very hockey savvy, which is very noticeable on the PK. If Chia manages to entice Ottawa enough for Phillips to go to a division rival, you'll want to thank him afterwards because the juice will be worth the squeeze. Reunited with Chara on the backend, Boston would arguably have the best top 2 in the East. Be prepared to lose more than a 2nd for him though. I'm not saying Phillips' performance this year warrants such a bounty, but given the talent available this trade deadline, Ottawa will be dealing from a position of power. A bidding war should definitely up the ante on this one.

I would give up Minnesota's 2nd for Phillips or a solid prospect, no problem.

Last minute of a game, up one goal, Chara with Phillips and Thomas in net. Mark down the W.

As soon as Spezza returns the whole team plays awsome, especially Phillips.

He'll be awsome for a team like Boston with a system, leadership and especially paired with a former teammate.
