Marian Gaborik may be available

Sather is listening to offers for Gaborik, according to Darren Dreger. He is a RW, which we have a lot of, but it's still tough to pass up the possibility of getting a game changing scorer.

1st + Luke Adam + Brayden McNabb is what I would offer.

Before you go crazy on me, I do realize that this deal trades away our best Center prospect, and that Gaborik's cap hit may handcuff us in the future. But I wanted to start a discussion on it, because I've always loved Gaborik.

It would be stupid for us to give up our future for a guy like Gaborik. We're a team that's good now, but won't be seen as a threat for another couple years at least, because of players like Adam and McNabb in our system. I just don't think it's a good idea to trade those guys when our franchise is trying to become bigger and more physical.

We've already sat through enough injury woes with Connolly, I don't wanna watch it for another 4+ years with Gaborik.

Screw it, I don't want another injury prone player on the team.

I'd fold. he wouldn't play more than 40-50 games per season.

I want the Sabres to spend less on the wings and more up the middle.

As such, I'd pass.

Let's see, an overpaid, injury-prone right-winger. That's not exactly something I'd give up good prospects for right now.

Gaborik is one of the most naturally talented goal scorers in the entire league and is certainly the kind of guy who can creaite offense all on his own. 2 out of the last 3 years he played 75+ games and this year is on pace for 65-70. It would entirely depend on what Slather wanted for him but Gaborik is the type of player Buffalo hasn't seen in a very, very long time.

You make this sound like a great idea.

Bringing in Gaborik is like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. It might look good, but it really doesn't address our major problem.

Let's see.....

Gaborik is oft-injured....prone to bouts of laziness....streaky....can't/won't play D........doesn't play center....

Sounds EXACTLY like what the Sabres need, doesn't it?

If THE problem is the center position, no it doesn't address that. But it does address one of our problems, I've heard people complain all year about the lack of a player who can take over a game and/or create their own offense on a regular basis. Gaborik IS that type of player. Doesn't he fill the need at C? No. Is he a perfect fit? Absolutely not. Does he address A problem? Sure does.

I know right now is a difficult time to see that problem in particular since the offense has been flowing for the last few weeks (especially in the past few games) but I'm not quite secure in this teams offensive ability going forward.

DISCLAIMER: I do not think that we should trade for Gaborik because there are some inherent risks with him regarding his injury history and salary, but I do think he would help the team in areas where we could use it.

Center first please.

A high-end scoring winger'd be nice, but wouldn't fix the center issue.

If we can use these assets to get a #2 Center, then by all means use them for that. I just don't see a better player than Gaborik available (Assuming Dreger is right). He's one of the best snipers in the league, and we've needed a goal scorer for years.

Eh, if he can be had for pennies on the dollar, they'd be stupid not to. It affords them the ability to move Pominville without suffering a loss and probably makes the team a bit more attractive to FAs such as Richards.

Hate the contract though.

If he is indeed available then I'm sure another team would be willing to give up more for him than the Sabres because he doesn't fill a need

As much as I'd love to have a game-breaker and exciting player to watch, it seems that Gaborik is similar to Kovalchuk in that he thrives when he's the only star on the roster and allowed to play as an individual - but put into a team-oriented system where he's asked to play a part with some structure, he underachieves.

I'd be hesitant to spend that kind of cap space on a player like that.

Capgeek says he has a NTC, so I doubt it's really an option.

And while I'd like the player, there is no way I want that contract with his injury history.

Gaborik is a terrific player but for Sabres at that caphit? Unless NYR is looking to just dump him (which I sincerely doubt), it's not worth it for us.
