Sabres Deadline moves (Random Speculation Thread)

Obviously way too many moves to be realistic, was trying to keep these in the ballpark though - was kinda fun trying to juggle it all... Thoughts?

First move is with Edmonton**:
To Buffalo:
C Shawn Horcoff ($5.5M)
2011 2nd RND Pick
To Edmonton:
C Tim Connolly ($4.5M)
D Chris Butler ($850K)
2011 Conditional 2nd RND Pick (Connolly resigning)

** I know its a gamble - The question is "Is Horcoff really as bad as he seems, or is it more a result of a terrible team/terrible coaching staff up to this point?"
Honestly, He cant play much worse than Timmy has, he's a lot less injury prone and he can win Faceoffs consistently. It might be interesting to see what playing with a Stafford/Pommer type linemate would do for him. I'm Rolling the dice.
As for Butler - Edm needs D-Men, and I needed a 2nd to carry on these crazy shenanigans...

Then to Ottawa:
To Buffalo:
C Mike Fisher ($4.2M)
To Ottawa:
2011 2nd RND Pick (EDM)
2012 2nd RND Pick (BUF)
C Luke Adam ($875K)

Then on to Nashville:
To Buffalo:
LW JP Dumont ($4M)
2011 2nd RND Pick
To Nashville:
LW Jochen Hecht ($3.525M)
D Steve Montador ($1.55M)

Finally to Columbus
To Buffalo:
D Rusty Klesla ($2.975M)
To Columbus:
D MA Gragnani ($575K)
2011 2nd RND Pick (NSH)

Waive Rob Neidermayer -1.25M

Sabres Line-up come first round (hoping Roy is back, otherwise put Byron in ...)

LW-C-RW
1~Vanek-Roy-Ennis
2~Pommer-Horcoff-Stafford
3~Dumont-Fisher-Gerbe
4~McCormick-Gaustad-Kaleta
X-Byron
X-Grier
waived-Neidermayer

1~Myers-Leopold
2~Sekera-Klesla
3~Weber-Morrisonn
X-Rivet

Miller
Lalime

Team Cap hit $58,644,116

I'm guessing it would take more for Fisher than two 2nd round picks and Adam. I'd do it though.

Fisher for a late 1st and a 3rd/conditional 2nd.

2 2nd's and Adam? Massive overpayment.

and I would have given up our 1st for 2 years of Fisher at declining salary.

1st round pick for Fisher?

Pass.

Do we need a player like Fisher? Yes, yes we do.

However, given how good the West is......if the Sabres miss the playoffs, it's VERY likely that the draft pick will be top 10 (right now, the Sabres would pick SEVENTH -- and we're only 4 pts out of the playoffs).

I wouldn't pay a top 10 pick for Fisher.........especially not to a division rival.

To thank them for stopping us from giving in to the urge to re-sign him ourselves.

We're not going to be picking 7th if we trade for Fisher and make the playoffs. No better than 15th then. So, yes, given that he's signed for 2 years at declining salary and a smaller cap hit than Timmay!, I would gladly pay what NSH paid for him. Fisher would solidify our center depth while Adam developed and provide all the things we wish we were getting from Tim Connolly.

I would give The Lisp the 15th to 18th pick (assuming a first round exit) for that guy. NSH is likely giving up the 24th or so as they're challenging for the Central title. Good for Poile. Finally dealt his 1st rounder and picked the right guy to get with it.

With Fisher as the #2 guy I'd make a push for 7th and hope for Tampa in the 1st round.

I like Horcoff. He's a hard worker and a leader. But bringing him here with that contract would create major constraints on future moves. He has had injury problems and his body appears to be declining as fast as Craig Rivet's. He'll 33 at the start of next season.

As usual, Regier is sleeping, Fisher is heading to Nashville, I think he would have made a perfect pick for the Sabres. Hard working, brings it evry game... you snooze, you loose.........

No thanks to Horcoff. He makes $5.5M a season until 2016 and he's basically good for 0.5 PPG. Maybe if he were on re-entry waivers, but otherwise no.

I would try to get Stephen Weiss from Florida though.

Hemsky + maybe.

Or.. if they do this coupled with some other significant upgrades I wouldn't mind Hemsky. Always liked his game.

Anybody catch Garth's tweet about foligno? Says sabres have inquired .. if Ottawas willing to part I'd love to take him off their hands. Maybe pominville and a prospect or pick? Or maybe Roy for foligno plus and use the plus to package for a center down the road?

Both foligno brothers would be fun

I would only give up a pick for Foligno. He's not worth a player AND a prospect.

Especially not Pominville +.

If Pominville is headed to Ottawa for Foligno, then the Sens need to add to the package and not the other way around.

I'd want something like Foligno & Rundblad for Pominville.

Regier is totally asleep on this one!!! How did he not forsee that at some point in the future a Country singing star would be married to the Center we needed!! He should have set Buffalo up as the Country music mecca a long time ago

Anytime. Pominville is so soft. I'd dump the contract. Guy is a $5.3-million cap hit. Ugggh.

Who is speculating this? Also, I find it ironic that you ripped my post about McDonald in the "High Risk, High Reward" thread, and then throw out Hemsky's name in this thread. Hemsky missed 60 games last year, and has already missed 15 games this season.

Anyways, Hemsky is the more talented player, and he's signed to a better contract. If Buffalo ever did this deal, they'd have to find someone who could replace Pominville's ability on the PK. I can't see this deal happening if for no other reason than Ruff gives Pominville a ton of responsibility, and much of that would have to be reallocated if the team moved him. Can't see it.

I think you have way too much free time on your hands.

I could see Darcy trading for a good backup goalie or shipping out Montador if he's really in such high demand that we could get a really good return for him. I would hate to Monty go , though.

Connolly will be hard to move because he's overpaid, injury prone, not an impact player, and will be UFA in a few months anyway. He's also our only "skilled" natural center with veteran experience right now, so if he's traded there has to be either a replacement trade in place or a lot of other value added to the mix if we expect to get an upgrade in return. I could maybe see him going to a team like Phoenix, who are pathetic down the middle right now and mired in a tight playoff race. But I suspect we're stuck with him until his contract expires. I would be OK with re-signing him for a lot less than he's making now.
