If they are a team full of smurf forwards and feel they need some size to go along with goal scoring ability then Penner would have more value than Fisher.
Up until fairly recently the MSM have all been down on Penner because he doesnt use his size to bang and create turnovers and to a certain extent they are right. He doesnt tend to throw a lot of hits but as you said he does use his size to control the puck, the lack of bang and his size make him look lazy and he still takes knocks for that even if they arent waranted.

Penner might get a bit more than Fisher in the right situation like you say but I dont think it would be substantially more and that's the problem. If he got a 1st and a 2nd no conditions to it does that really help this team? Maybe down the road if they get lucky at the draft table and the player develops. I dont think that is enough though, I cant see trading Penner or Hemsky unless you get a significant prospect back and not just a 50/50 shot at one.

A 1st round pick is fair value for Fisher. The conditional pick kicks in only if the Predators advance to the second or the third round.

While not elite in any one area, Fisher is versatile enough to play in any role asked of him while keeping his head above water and providing leadership and physical play. That being said, he looks to be declining and his cap hit is certainly a little high.

If you don't have much faith in the Predators advancing past the 1st round then all Murray got was a ~20th overall pick which is no sure thing. I fail to see how Nashville overpaid.

Edit: Just to add. A lot of people on this board seem to think players like Fisher are easy to come by which is not the case. Off the top of my head, Stoll and Fisher are the best comparable out west. You don't see GM's willing to give up these players often.

Okay so obviously I'm missing something. As much as I like fish, Penner is worth much more.

Not only has he had a better season offensively, he is also a better playoff preformer. He was a big part in the ducks stanley cup run and is an absolute beast when motivated.

Not to take anything away from fish but Penner is better offensively, has more size, and makes his linesmates better- regardless of who he plays with.

Was fisher worth a first round pick? Yes, but Ottawa will be lucky if a pick in the 15-20 range turns out to be as good as fisher. IMO Penner would bring back a similar pick plus a prospect of about the same pedigree.

Maybe Penner to LA for their first and tuebert? I still think Bogosian is the best player on the market for Penner.

Fisher has been very inconsistent offensively since he signed that contract, he had a NTC and the market for centers isn't great. I think the situation is opposite as what the OP suggests.

I know its not all about the numbers but:

Dustin Penner:
Current: 53GP 18G 16A 34P -9
Career: 82GP 32G 31A 63P +6

Mike Fisher:
Current: 14G 10A 24P -19
Career: 25G 28A 53P +1

Just based on point totals and +/- Penner is the better player.

I know there was some discussion in another thread about McGuire saying we couldn't get a 1st for Penner.

I'm listening to that interview McGuire did with Tencer, and I must say, I'm usually a McGuire fan, but is he like, 2 years behind the times?

Penner is an ironman who has missed only 5 games (of a possible 218) in the last 3 seasons compared to Hemsky who has missed 87 games over the same span.

Penner has put up 134 points over those three seasons to Hemsky's 119.

If I'm a GM giving up assets I would think Penner is the safer bet and hence worth more.
Hemsky missed all of last year so....it's actually pretty ridiculous how close they are in points. Hemmer is clearly the better player.
