Hamhuis has just started light workouts. Under the concussion protocol he is still not near returning to action.

Ballard is ahead of schedule apparently and will begin skating next week.

Haha possibly

The regular hospital beds didn't have enough umph. Plus with arm injuries I wanted our doctors to have the best access

Nothing we didn't already know, but it's "official" now.

For those who want information on the actual NHL concussion protocol, here it is from Dr. Ruben Echemendia, the NHL's leading voice in the research, data collection and analysis of concussions..
"If at that time the player is determined to have had a concussion than that triggers the concussion protocol, which means the player must be kept out of play until they are symptom-free both at rest and on exertion," he said

Notably, the player is held out of practices, workouts and games. Additionally, "strenuous cognitive activity," such as video games, prolonged reading, working at a computer monitor -- activities that all "tax the brain and increase symptoms" -- are avoided.

Echemendia said the player will have to pass "a fairly extensive neuropsychological test battery conducted by the consulting neuropsychologist [who works closely with NHL/NHLPA Concussion Working group] for each team."

The data from those tests goes to the team physician, who ultimately makes the decision on when the player can return.

"Throughout that process we put the player through a gradual increasing intensity of physical exercise to see whether the physical provocation brings about any symptoms," Echemendia said, adding the physical exercise tests begin with trials on a stationary bike.
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=545327

All this is based on the ground-breaking work by Dr. Karen Johnson which treats a concussion as functional brain injury and not something you can rehab by "fighting through it".

Basically it is a series of steps once you are symptom free at rest and if you experience discomfort or symptoms at any step, you shut it down and go back to step one and start allover again.

Hockey Canada has similar protocol and issues the Hockey Canada Concussion Card:

Oberg not in MAN line-up tonight. Bad sign. Kevin Bieksa X-rays on foot last night were negative. Went for further testing today.

I assume the bad sign bit is that he might have been called up, which isn't great on the injury front if Bieksa is hurt

It's probably a precautionary call up in case KB3 can't go tomorrow. At least, that's what I'm hoping. Negative x rays is a good sign, probably just a lot of swelling in the foot right now.

I guess not. But on the radio it sounds like he might have been injured in warmup.

TEAM1040 is NOT reporting Kevin Bieksa is out of tomorrow's lineup!! Still no word on whether Evan Oberg has been recalled...

@sportsnetmurph hey murph two eye witness accounts at MTS centre say you are right. Oberg listed but never hit ice
Was Oberg pulled to make sure he doesn't get injured and has energy for Nashville?

Edit: indeed.

Claude Noel on Oberg "Kept him out due to a transaction that may occur with the Canucks". To me, that sounds like Bieksa is not right.
