Grade the Blues 2000 Draft

Its probably about time that we can evaluate the draft class of 2000.

30 Taffe
65 Morisset
75 Papineau
96 Bergeron
129 Riddle
167 Weller
229 Lutes
261 Divis
293 Kinos

IMO, the Blues deserve a D for this draft. Taffe could still become a 2nd line center, but he had better improve substatially if he is going to get there. Papineau is still trying to make the NYI's roster. Divis can be a solid NHL backup and is probably the only better than draft position value out of the group. Riddle still has a shot. However, overall the Blues didn't draft one impact player in 2000. Your not going to build a cup team through the draft if you keep having drafts like this one.

I just finished looking at the entire 2000 draft (just a puruse mind you) but outside of the 1st round, in which we had the last pick, there wasn't a lot available. Take a look at other teams picks and just tell me who, after the first round what names really jump out at you.

Rupp and Fahey are really the only two that I noticed. Say what you want, but it looks to have been a poor draft outside of the 1st round.

Players available after the Blues picked:

33 Nick Schultz
54 Andreas Lilja
55 Antoine Vermette
62 Paul Marting
76 Michael Rupp
78 Jozef Balej
85 Ramzi Abid
88 Kurt Sauer
97 Niclas Wallin
104 Jon DiSalvatore (listed him just because of the recent signing)
118 Lubomir Visnovsky
135 Mike Danton
159 John-Michael Liles
171 Roman Cechmanek
232 Lubomir Sekeras

Just to name a few. It wasn't the deepest draft, but their were some NHLers available pretty late.

But in all fairness, most later rounders are just pure luck. They have been passed on by about everyone and someone took a shot at them and gave them a chance and they worked hard to develop. Far more late round picks don't turn out then do, unlike 1st rounders where at least the majority will play (at various levels of success) in the NHL.

IMO, considering we had the last pick... I would grade us as average. Pap and Taffe are atleast getting time in the NHL. Riddle may become a decent AHLer and Divis is playing backup. Nothing great, but not poor either.

The last two drafts we have done very well, which is something I hope to continue.

That draft definatly sucked, I am reading and hearing good things about the last 2 hopefully Yarmo and his staff have turned that around.
