The Kings are dumping it when they feel like they have no other options, even though they have plenty. They're scared to try and make a play at the blueline or carry the puck in.
I can guarantee you that for as much flak as TM gets, every NHL coach promotes carrying the puck across the blueline, entering the zone with speed, getting the puck to the middle, and getting bodies to the net. He's no exception. The Kings are executing poorly.
Do you read Murray's comments on Hammonds blog? Murray's system is to dump, cycle and get shots from the point. It is not a puck possession, skate in across the blue line offense.
Notice how Loktionov is the only one skating through the middle for passes? He hasn't been destroyed by Murray yet. He will probably be benched for it soon.
This is one reason why I hate fighting nowadays in hockey. You have people like Murray who think throwing in a terrible player like Westgarth will SHIFT THE MOMENTUM when they go down with a BIG STAGED FIGHT. These staged fights to get the boys riled up is ********; do you think a fight that starts just because you're down one and doing nothing is going to charge the guys up?
At least when Simmonds or Clifford fight, there is some damn emotion. Westgarth fighting is like watching a pro wrestling match.
Maybe this period was just to lure the Capitals into a sense of security. Dump it in over and over. Have Kopitar play like casper and do absolutely nothing. Then, in the 2nd, we'll drive down the middle, mix it up, and get some fast break shots. They'll never expect it. They'll all be behind the net, waiting for us to dump it in.
Another reason I hate dumping it in all the time? You get two Kings behind the net when we lose it, and the other team gets a huge break on the other end.
