Earlier I made a thread about the top soccer stars. I was expecting very few replies and I somehow got over 100 as the thread turned into a big debate. In the thread though, I was given some top soccer players. Here are some of these top soccer players and what I want you to do is rank them from best to worst.
Edgar Davids
Pavel Nedved
Zinedine Zidane
Thierry Henry
Roy Makaay
Ruud Van Nistelrooy
Michael Owen
Ronaldo
Andriy Shevchenko
David Trezeguet
David Beckham
Luis Figo(realize that him and Beckham are overrated)
Also, I don't want someone coming here and tell me that soccer is a team sport and if you have a team with mostly top stars, a team with far less stars can still beat them, and then mention a team like Real Madrid. I just want you guys to rank these players.
01) Zinedine Zidane
02) Ruud Van Nistelrooy/Thierry Henry
03) Ruud Van Nistelrooy/Thierry Henry
04) Pavel Nedved
05) Andrei Shevchenko
06) Edgar Davids (huge fan)
07) David Trezeguet
08) Roy Makaay
09) Ronaldo
10) Luis Figo (took a huge drop)
11) Michael Owen (not a fan of his)
12) David Beckham

a.) Zidane
b.) Nedved
c.) van Nistelrooy (close affair with d)
d.) Henry (close affair w/ e)
e.) Shevchenko (I like him better than Ronaldo, that's why I rank him higher)
f.) Ronaldo
g.) Makaay (too bad he plays for Bayern, because he's one of my favorite players)
h.) Owen
i.) Trezeguet
They are better players than Figo, Beckham and Davids.
Zinedine Zidane
Ruud Van Nistelrooy
Thierry Henry
Pavel Nedved
Ronaldo
Andriy Shevchenko
Edgar Davids
Roy Makaay
Michael Owen
David Trezeguet
David Beckham
Luis Figo
I'll have a go at it even though I don't like comparing forwards to midfielders, but since you didn't want too much debate....
I'll rank them in the order I would want them on my team...
1) Zidane
2) Henry
3) Shevchenko
4) Nedved (technically not the best of the lot, but he's got a heart the size of a football)
5) Davids (he's the toughest one to list as he's a defensive player mostly and it's hard to compare him to the other guys on the list - but he's very valuable to any team IMO)
6) Van Nistelrooy
7) Trézéguet (maybe a bit high after his recent 'performance' at the Euro 2004, but I'm a big fan and frankly if I already tried to put him a few places lower because of my bias)
8) Ronaldo
9) Makaay
10) Owen
11) Figo
12) Beckham
Difficult, some players you can't compare with each other, so you have to go with who's more valuable.
01] Thierry Henry
02] Pavel Nedved
03] Andriy Shevchenko
04] Ruud Van Nistelrooy
05] Zinedine Zidane
06] Ronaldo
07] Michael Owen
08] Roy Makaay
09] Edgar Davids
10] David Trezeguet
11] Luis Figo
12] David Beckham
I'm surprised that M=D, BF and Frolov all have Figo over Beckham. Compared with Figo, Beckham is better defensively (look at his play with Real in the first half of the season) and a better leader (not great, but not as bad as Figo). Figo is the better dribbler, but that often hurts more than it helps.

I agree with this, but as far as I'm concerned Figo should think about retirement and Beckham should move back to England where his style of play is works better. I hate them both
Though I'll freely admit some of these posters above are a lot more knowledgable than me ... I'm a glutton. This is considering the last year, not further. Career-wise or "current form" would be different.
1. Pavel Nedved
2. Thierry Henry
3. Andriy Shevchenko
4. Ruud Van Nistelrooy
5. Zinedine Zidane
6. Ronaldo
7. Michael Owen
8. Edgar Davids
9. David Beckham
10. Roy Makaay
11. Luis Figo
12. David Trezeguet
I'm bored so I'll make a list too. I don't much about these guys as a whole so I'll base my rankings from Euro 2004.
1. Pavel Nedved
2. Ruud Van Nistelrooy
3. Zinedine Zidane
4. Edgar Davids
5. Roy Makaay

Haven't seen much of Figo but from what I have seen I found that he's turned the ball over alot and carried it too long. But really, I don't know if that's necessarily dumb because the other team can knock the ball out of bound or he can draw a penalty. Also, I haven't seen Shevchenko so I assume he is not on a team participating in Euro 2004. And I know that Ronaldo is from Brazil so he's not in this tournament.

1) Thierry Henry (when used right and when he feels like it unstoppable)
2) Pavel Nedved (the best/most under-rated midfielder today in my opinion)
3) Ruud Van Nistelrooy (the king of the offside rule changes)
4) Zinedine Zidane (getting old)
5) Andriy Shevchenko (elite forward)
6) Ronaldo (hasn't impressed me at Madrid)
7) Michael Owen (young and lethal)
8) David Trezeguet (another elite striker)
9) Roy Makaay (lesser elite striker)
10) Edgar Davids (what can I say, he's good he's never impressed me)
11) Figo (used to be one of the best but now, well, he isn't)
12) David Beckham (he makes the odd brillant free-kick, long shot, or pass but in my opinion the most over-rated player in soccer history and a product of the English tabloids)
Ranking Trézéguet these days is a bit biased. Because obviously, he's not playing up to his potential.
Zidane is IMO a step above everyone.
Owen was IMO lost before his resurrection against Portugal. We'll have to see.
I'd take Davids before Figo.
1. Thierry Henry - Creative striker who can score and setup others, still in the prime of his career
2. Pavel Nedved - Persistent and tireless team player, can be immensely important for his team.
3. Zinedine Zidane - Used to be the best player in the world, but his age is starting to show; also moreso than with Nedved.
4. Ruud Van Nistelrooy - More reliant on his team mates than Henry, though a somewhat better finisher.
5. Andriy Shevchenko - Excellent complete striker.
6. Edgar Davids - Extremely motivated and tough defensive midfielder who just keeps going.
7. Roy Makaay - Another excellent striker who needs few chances to finish.
8. Ronaldo - Probably the man with the most natural talent in the world; if only he made proper use of it...
9. David Trezeguet - Has never really impressed me that much, even though he has done quite well with Juve.
10. David Beckham - Overrated and overhyped, but still a good player and one of the best passers in the game.
11. Michael Owen - Also one of the more overrated names, he is a good player but has never been able to fullfill the promise of WC 98.
12. Luis Figo - Has slowed down and hasn't gotten near his level at Barça a few years back. Pride is also developping him into a potential dressing room cancer.
Would also be interesting if the poster who added 'junkie' to Davids could explain what the heck he meant...
Vieira should be in there.
Davids is the only defensive midfielder out of the bunch. And IMO there's no better than Vieira when it comes to defensive midfielders.

Thats how I feel about Davids, actually. Viera has the tendency to has his off-games every now and then, Davids never ever quits working and is a lot of players worst nightmare. Plus, Davids has a very underrated playmaking and offensive game, too bad that part hasn't really shown itself at this tournament aside from the game against the Czech Republic.

You can't really blame me. I don't know a whole lot about soccer at this point but I'm learning.

I think it's fairly self-explanatory but if not you can PM me as it's probably not a discussion big_steve wants in this threaad which was created for a purpose.

This thread is about ranking certain soccer players, and you are allowed to give reasons as of why you rank him at that position. Everyone here wants to know why you label Davids a "junkie" then eloborate instead of trying to talk it out by PM..

Why is Davids a junkie?
He failed a drugs test, testing positive for Nandrolone and received a 5 month ban which was then reduced to four. He's tested positive for drugs, and looking at him he's probably still on them, therefore I have no respect for him, or Couto or Guardiola or any of the others who did drugs which is why I ranked him last.

What does Nandrolon have to do with being a junkie??
That's right nothing at all.
And FYI, I would imagine than that you don't like any Italian player than as it is a public secret that they were (are?) all doped, especially in the early 90's.

This was because of the medicine he had to take for his eye.. Whether you believe that or not, it's awfully coincidental he got tested positive right when he had that eye problem.
Still, this has nothing to do with his football qualities..
