Yeah to elaborate, McGuire said on Ottawa radio one GM called him and asked him what he thought of Kovalev. Then when talking about the Sens on Edmonton radio the guys were saying we won't get a sniff for Kovalev and McGuire cut him off repeating what he said about the GM calling him and said that GM is not afraid at all of putting an offer in and that most GMs feel like they can salvage a player that has high end skill.

Also said he thinks it didn't work in Ottawa because his heart was never really in it, and he did it because they were offering way more money than anyone else was...and he lives a lifestyle filled with flying planes and helicopters and needs a paycheck to keep it up.

It's become very apparent Kovalev will probably be traded for no less than a 4th round pick. I'll be realistically hoping for a 3rd....and I think there's the potential for 2nd type value...but won't be disappointed if it's not there.

If we can get a mid 2nd for Kovalev that would make my day

A 3rd would be fair I'd say

And a month ago Sens fans would have been happy with a 5th.

A 2nd Rounder, maybe a prospect too.

He's on an expiring contract, so:
You'll have contract year, playoff intense Kovalev til this offseason, and not regular season Floatalev for xx more years.

Shero isn't a desperate kind of GM.

3rd + a fringe high risk/high reward prospect.

I think the bar's been set at a 2nd - and I would wait until the very last second to do it. Hopefully we net something halfway decent - even a 3rd is fine.

The bar? The only way the Versteeg trade influences the value of Kovalev is if the GM trading for him is AT the bar, pounding back a few pints.

Prices are high this year, very few sellers. You figure it out.

I agree, but Kovy's big cap hit, even prorated, could drag down the market for him somewhat. I can't say I'd be surprised to see someone cough up a 2nd, though.

Yeah, I doubt anyone grabs him until the final day. I think the Sens would take a high risk/high reward prospect for him without the pick - and that could be more enticing to a team moving forward.

EDIT: I'll echo this the day he's traded: someone is gonna get a heck of a deal. Kovalev is playing like we wanted him to play when we signed him and you just get that sense that he's gonna want to 'show' people what he can do in the playoffs. A very good pickup when all is said and done.

Kovalev has a NMC, so unless he unilaterally waives it (and who would do that to lose control over your future?) that will lower his price a bit.

Don't count on it. It will at least be a 2nd. A desperate team with there is an excellent fit, say like the Pens, might pay more.

LMAO. Dude is like 38. you're not gonna get a 2nd.

Plus he had a 3 pt game, so that means he'll disappear for the next 14.
hf users over rate the value of picks, naturally.

Eric Bélanger, a role player, was traded for a second last year. Sutton was acquired for a second.

Kovy is still one of the most purely skilled player in the league and has proven to be a playoffs performer. He'll easily fetch a second rounder. Stop trying to be a smart ass.

Let's stop with the Pens are desperate thing. They will not offer more than a 2nd for Kovy. No chance. I have my doubts they'd even offer a 2nd for Kovy. I could see some team offering that. Just doubt the Pens will since they're already without a 3rd and 4th. I think Shero wants to keep his remaining picks unless it's for a long-term solution.

Long term solution will not work for a team like the Pens that don't have the cap space and have many players signed long term. They need a UFA (no strings attached) and take advantage of the space created by Geno's this year.

Pens have an abundance of cap space to take on a long term option now Geno is done for the year. Pens have like 5 forwards signed for next season.

Pens should offer a 4th. Would goaltender John Curry interest the Sens at all. Curry for Kovalev?
