Penguins had 2 scouts at the Senators game vs. the Islanders.

I still believe that Kovalev's value will keep going up until the deadline.

I expect a bidding war to happen. The guy is a legit top-6 forward who has shown in the past that he can truly take over a game. There aren't any other top-6 players on the market right now, besides Hemsky. His salary is pretty much a non-factor since he's UFA at the end of the year.

He will fetch a 2nd+

Of course not.

Teams would rather pay a 2nd for superstar players like Belanger, Dominic Moore, Andy Sutton, Matt Cullen or Chris Kelly.

And Bill Guerin went for a conditional 5th that became a 3rd. One trade doesn't necessarily have any bearing on another.

I believe the Penguins are beyond desperate at this point and will not overpay for anyone, especially Kovalev who would do basically nothing in improving their chances for a deep run this year. Penguins should just ride it out this year, other than deals geared to the future. IMO

Conditional third round pick (becomes second round pick if they make Eastern Conference finals) would be what I'd ask.

To Pittsburgh, by the way.

Kovalev is almost a point a game player in the playoffs, so for those saying he's not going to help a playoff team do your research before speaking. Kovalev garners a 2nd round pick for a playoff contender.

Tough to see when they dont have a 3rd
Pitt would do more than a conditional 5th round pick

These guys made the power play so much better and facilitated puck movement style of play at its best... Kovy fits the mold, could even cure the power play.
Besides, they've traded for geezers like Fedorov in the past at the deadline... wouldn't be surprised to see them make a bid.
Yeah, OV and the Caps' powerplay struggled so much last year without Kozlov, Fedorov, and Nylander...

Eric Bélanger, a role player, was traded for a second last year. Sutton was acquired for a second.

Kovy is still one of the most purely skilled player in the league and has proven to be a playoffs performer. He'll easily fetch a second rounder. Stop trying to be a smart ass.
Player A: 60GP, 13G/22A/35P, 57.6% faceoffs, excellent PKer, $1.75M cap hit
Player B: 58GP, 13G/13A/26P, Powerplay specialist, $5M cap hit

In case it wasn't painfully obvious, A was Belanger at the deadline last year and B is Kovalev right now. I think it's pretty clear why a lot of teams would value Belanger more than Kovalev.

I could see Shero considering a conditional 5th that becomes a 2nd if Pittsburgh advances to the conference finals (for example). But even in this scenario, it would probably be a last minute deal with the Pens exhausting all other options and Ottawa will likely get a better deal anyhow. Problem with Kovalev is that he's the antithesis of Dan Bylsma hockey and there's no indication that Sid is even close to returning. Without Sid, acquiring any rental would be almost pointless really.

I actually think Washington would make much more sense. Their scoring numbers are way down and the team needs a jolt plus Kovalev would be working with Ovy/Semin. He could definitely be a difference maker with them for one Cup run, although I'm not sure where their cap is at these days.

According to capgeek, the Caps could take on about $6.7M at the deadline.
