Stuarts cap hit is not small if they lose stuart they can afford giggy
1) Giggy isn't an upgrade over Howard. We don't want him
2) Detroit's issues have been more on defense than in goal, and you're asking for one of our better Dmen.
3) If Detroit needs to salary dump to sign players they'd wait to the off-season.
No. Its better to have a consistant D-man than an iffy, over-priced goaltender.
Its not a deal Detroit will make (for obvious reasons) but Giguere is more than an iffy goalie. He's actually consistent and he has played very well considering the team he is playing on. He wouldn't be brought in on any team for an upgrade but rather as a backup to another goalie.
The overpriced argument is moot. He's an unrestricted FA. His cost matters only if a team can fit him. Nothing more.
Stuart is one of the few physical and stay-at-home defensemen on the Red Wings' roster. He certainly will not be traded for Giguere, whose salary is even higher than Stuart's. Ericsson has developed into a solid lower-pairing-defensman, but Detroit will not sacrifice to much in order to afford an extension. Kindl might take over his role next year, with B. Smith receiving some ice time.
If Detroit were to do this (and they wouldn't) they would need to send more salary back towards Toronto. Something closer (albeit still not happening) would be Giguere+Gunnarsson for Stuart+Hudler. Detroit would be sending 6.625 to Toronto, Toronto would be sending 6.8 back to Detroit.
