Swedish Hockey federation to hoist #21?

The Swedish hockey federation suggested today that Peter Forsbergs jersey, #21, along with Mats Sundins #13, should be hoisted to the roof. A tradition very foreign in Swedish hockey and would be a first.

So, what does the hockeyfans on these boards think about the idea?

Would be silly to start now. Old-timers like Tumba didn't have his jersey retired, so..

Nor did they hoist Salmings jersey.. besides I think it's a bad idea to uplift players to a near-mythological status by doing stuff like this. Acknowledge Forsberg (and by all means, Sundin, Lidström etc too) for his contributions to swedish hockey but let it end there.

Oh dear... Does this have something to do with the newly instituted Swedish Hockey Hall of Fame?

Would just be awkward imo. Although us Swedes are VERY bad at honoring our great former players, only time we usually honor them is when they die..

Team Finland hasn't retired jerseys. Russia and Canada have.

#21 got a history and it seems to be more #21 to follow. I rather let players continue to honour the number the informal way by picking it as their own number. It is the number in Sweden, I think a formal thing about #21 would take away from the number.

Nope, we shouldn't start now if we haven't done it before. That said, I do think players themselves should be "careful" and show respect should they want to pick up number 21. If your regular number is 12 or something and you can't have it in a tournament, avoid 21, that's my take on it.

maybe it's possible to retire #21, then unretire, retire again, wait a few weeks, talk about unretiring, finally unretired, retire again...

One of the silliest threads on these boards that I have ever seen, including the silly ones I started myself for the sole purpose of being silly.

A freaking # is a freaking #. Holy jerseys!!! What's next?! Should one retire the damn sport after one of these guys decide to quit?!

Get real. Move on. Play the damn game.

I agree completely. I wish we were better at honoring our former greats, but retiring numbers are not the way to go.

Agreed. But some type of memorial museum where you could go to pay homage to the old greats would be nice.

on a more serious note tho, I usually wouldn't like a number being retired in the national team, but for Forsberg, Sundin and Lidström I'm willing to make an exception.
