Shea Weber update

Since I know this is typically a hot button item and there are always rampant bad proposals based on Weber perhaps "wanting out,"

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news;_yl...heaweber021511

Disappointing for Preds fans that we'll have to wait a few more months for resolution, but understandable that there's more important matters going on right now on the ice, and that's where they want to stay focused.

In our market, he has tremendous impact, because hes grown up a Nashville Predator, Trotz said. He understands that were still growing hockey, and hes one of the reasons why we are. He signs the autographs. Hes selling the game.

Asked if he was open to a long-term deal, Weber said: Im open to whatever. I love it here. I love the guys. I love the organization. But Weber, 25, whose salary is $4.5 million this season, said he and the Predators had agreed a while ago to wait until the offseason to negotiate. He doesnt want to be distracted from the business at hand.

Personally, I'd love playing in Phoenix, Nashville, Atlanta, Florida, Columbus, Dallas, etc...

Weber seems like a cool guy. You can't expect him to say anything else. If he wants to be in Tennesee, why would negotiations be a distraction? His agent tells him when to sign. It would've taken ten minutes.

I think I found the secret message!

That said I expect Weber to stay in Nashville for a long time.

Makes perfect sense for Weber to wait until the summer. He's a year away from UFA, so really, the power is totally in his court during negotiations in the summer.

If, and that's an IF, he wants to leave because the Preds either don't make the playoffs or get eliminated in round 1, then maybe Weber questions if the Preds can win with how the franchise needs to run the team. They have to stick with their internal budget. Everything has to fall perfectly into place for a Cup run.

If he does want out, he can force the Preds hands by telling them that he won't sign long term with them. Preds can either elect to trade him in the summer or have Weber go to arbitration, get his 1 year deal, and hit UFA in 2012. Then the Preds still get his services for a year and can deal his negotiating rights prior to July 1, 2012 for draft picks or something.

If Weber wants to stay, they should be able to hammer out a long term deal.

Again, it's totally up to Weber what he wants to do.

But, I would suspect, and it's only my opinion, that the Preds need to make some noise in the playoffs this season. If they don't make it into the dance or get knocked out in round 1 (If they finish between 3-6 in the West, it's really a pick'em at that point. Finish 7-8, then they would be considered underdogs.) then is winning really possible in Nashville?

As pure speculation having this idea is fine, but there is absolutely NOTHING to indicate that he's just blowing smoke. Another thing, players don't just tell their agents to make a deal, and then the next time they talk a deal is signed. I'm pretty sure this contract is big on Shea's mind. A lot has to be decided, and not the least of which is whether he thinks signing a long-term, comfortable deal in Nashville also gives him a chance to win. He can also sign a very short-term deal, see what the team's intentions are going forward, and then make a decision later. This is a pivotal moment in his young career, he's the captain of the team, and we're deep in a heated playoff race. How does it look to his teammates if he's distracted by contract negotiations instead of being focused on leading the team to a strong play off push?

All I can say is he is certainly handling it like a pro should. Absolutely love the guy for that. Met him in the elevator at a pre-season game and he is a humble giant.

Hope he stays.

I agree with most of this post, but there are a few parts with which I don't.

First, our internal budget is very real for the time being, but things are also looking bright for our immediate future. If things continue to go like this then full revenue sharing isn't going to be necessary, and we can make our budget bigger.

Second, I do agree with the overall idea that Weber wants to feel confident that this team can win. With that said, how many teams can actually afford him who can put themselves in a position to win before we can? I think it's a bit of a stretch to wonder whether we can win any time soon if we miss the play offs or are bounced in the first round.

I do hope this signing forces our hand in picking up an offensive threat and ::crosses fingers:: a freakin' PP coach who can actually... you know... coach a PP.
