No, we lost his rights this past summer. Apparently he's been playing as an overager with Mississauga in the OHL (they acquired him in trade from Sudbury, who acquired him off waivers from Victoriaville of the QMJHL).

He's only played 20 games for Mississauga though, and none since November 13th.

This article is from October 13th:

http://www.torontoobserver.ca/2010/1...fe-in-the-ohl/

A month later, he was released by Mississauga and a couple weeks later signed with the Miramichi Timberwolves of the Maritime Junior Hockey League:

Didn't see it anywhere in this thread, Jesper Fasth is making his debut in the national team, quite a surprise I would say.

That's great. I think there was some speculation though, before his injury, that he could get an invite. If he could make the World Championship that would be sensational, although with all the players from teams still playing in the SEL playoffs and players from non-playoff NHL teams he probably has no realistic chance. Nontheless it's a great accomplishment for such a young player to even get an invite, and for a 6th round pick he has come a very long way this season and has become a legit prospect.

How was his season in the SEL? Is he a lock to be on the team again next year and take on more of a role?

From a member of RDS (French sports channel in Canada):

Rangers signed goalie Jason Missiaen, a former pick of the Canadiens.

Don't know squat about this kid, wanted Kinkaid, but would just like to point out that he is 6'8" tall and only 220 lbs. Talk about a beanpole.

His stats aren't exactly great, they could've just signed stajcer then, he wasn't too bad before his injury. But maybe the scouting staff sees something in this guy. Our goalie prospects haven't been very good for nearly a decade though. Good thing hank can still play for some time

Hope Werek takes it easy on Thomas in the playoffs hahaha.

I've always wondered, although I'm certain it doesn't, if knowing the fact that you're playing an opponent in juniors knowing that you're in the same team's system as that opponent, do you play it maybe a little softer than you normally would?

Hope not, but interesting to think...maybe

Thats a negative. Can't speak for the juniors but if they're as competitive as the NCAA, no.

You'd want to play your own game to the max, especially if it dictates whether you even make your pro team in the first place.

Thought so, and that's definitely a good thing.

He started off in a bottom six role, and worked his way up to the top line and top PP unit. He was playing terrific hockey and getting big minutes before the injury derailed his campaign.

Also, I don't think this recent goalie signing necessarily shuts the door on signing Kinkaid.

if kinkaid will be so highly sought after, why would he sign with a team that has a 29 year old elite goalie signed for the long term?

Missiaen, despite his stats (3.33 , 0.893%), had a good season with Baie-Comeau. On most nights, he was their MVP. He relies a lot on his 6'8 when he is in front of the net. He's slow and when you make him move in front of his net, you can easily beat him.

I don't see him making it higher than the AHL. You don't play pro just because you're 6'8 tall. I think a 3 years contract is a lot but at least your team didn't spend a fourth pick on a goalie they didn't sign two years later!

Since he is subject to the ELC system there was no choice but to give him a three year deal due to his age. Of course they could've rather simply signed him to an AHL contract first

in a way that could creates extra motivation for werek/thomas to play even harder because you know the rangers will be making watching and comparing you...if i'm one of those guys i want to have a monster series and outplay the other guy so the rangers rank me over the guy i'm facing.

Does this mean we officially won the Gomez deal?

In all seriousness, thank you for the honest assessment!

Some other goalies in the Q would have been better signings like Evan Mosher in PEI.

He's going to be relatively highly sought-after as far as UDFA college players go. He's not going to get a deal from anyone with a chance to start. Just like Talbot last year, who signed with us.

not to start but possibly with a better chance of getting to the nhl...like if he signed with nj with the age of brodeur and hedberg they will be looking for a goalie in a few years so the odds of getting a shot is probably better there.

It's possible. Different priorities for different players...some guys might go where they think they have the quickest path to the NHL, others to the organization with the best reputation for developing players, and yet others to the organization that offers the best contract.

We'll have an opening for a backup goalie within the next two years. Kinkaid won't be seeing NHL action anywhere within that time frame. We also have an extremely well-respected coach in Benoit Allaire, and a recent pedigree of developing young players and playing those players when they're ready. We're also one of the largest markets and most historic franchises in the game. Plenty of reasons why the kid would sign here, even if there are other places where he might move more quickly.

All speculation though. We'll see within the next month or so.

EDIT: Another thing to consider is that the organization has shown a willingness to move prospects around if the player is dissatisfied or completely blocked.
