Maybe: Washington, Toronto, Los Angeles, Anaheim, CBus, Buffalo, Carolina
I think he will be claimed.
Half priced for next year, just 2.25M in real dollars. It's better than a buy-out for the Oilers.
Good news.
McKenzie is saying a claim has not been pre-arranged and that the Oilers are hoping someone will pick him up since blueliners seem to be a "hot commodity" right now.
This is smart GMing by the Oilers. Rather than buying him out/forcing a trade on him, we wait until the trade deadline when teams are desperate and his salary is half of what it should be. THis means we can get rid of him for no cost, or possibly get something in return!
Very strange move. Why now? Do they expect someone will pluck him at half price? If so, why did they wait so long? Does he play for the Oilers if no one bites?

This.
Also, if he clears unclaimed, then he can be dealt to a team who would be willing to take him if we take salary back, which opens up options for Tambo before next Friday's deadline.
No harm in recalling him. If he's not claimed or dealt in the next week, then he just goes back down and it's status quo.

If no one bites he goes back to Hershey. Right now makes sense, because GMs are seeing the steep price of defencemen right now and they may feel that Souray on re-entry is a bargain.
My guess is someone is getting desperate enough to give him a chance. The cap hit at this point would be pretty small. If it fails, I imagine they can put him back on waivers in the summer and not have his salary affect the cap for next year. Philly or Vancouver anyone? Vancouver could use some help on the blueline right now and it never hurts to have a veteran able to step in come playoff time.
What are you talking about? this is stupid... we have to pay half his salary if he gets claimed, over twice the remaining term... if we could have just waited a couple months we could have brought him back up free of penalty and dealt him for another useless player on the final year of contract and maybe even used em. (rolston anyone?)

The caphit doesn't count over twice the term. It's cheaper than buying him out.
I figure either someone expressed interest or he's going to be dealt for a salary dump.
maybe we are just really desperate for d-men with the roster-clearing wave of trades we are about to incur and might actually need souray for the warm body? that would be nice because it would indicate that we would be receiving some sort of return. unfortunately, it probably isn't the case.
He cleared waivers already, you think a team would give up an asset for him? Maybe a 7th rounder.
Agreed. People keep saying that we should wait until the right deal is available for him.. but there is no deal. When he went on waivers he was free, all you had to do was pay his salary. If no one wanted him for free, then who would want to trade an asset for him. I will be surprised if anyone even wants him for half his salary. No cup contending team will want some grumpy man to upset the locker room.

Makes sense, I guess. I think somebody would give him a shot at 2.7M if he was UFA. The extra year, however, most likely will cause teams to back off. Souray was described as a defensive liability in the AHL--not a chance good teams will handcuff himself with a 3M AHL defenseman for next year.
