Just like when he shut up the idiots booing Brisebois (should have done the same with the other idiots booing Price), I love what he said about Subban. Gainey is a man of few words but when he speaks, people listen (or should). That's what made him a great captain.
Gainey (about PK Subban):
'' I think Montreal is lucky to have him and the NHL is lucky to have him. "
I think like this (mentioned above) everytime I see PK wearing a Habs jersey, and I still can't believe he wasn't a top 10 overall choice. We were lucky (Timmins/Gainey) that PK was still available so late in the Draft.
Gotta love Mr.Gainey. So much respect for him. Gotta retire his number. Gotta.
And, gotta love PK!! Our Habs can make the playoffs thanks to Price, Pleks, and PK, and strong defense (incl. a strong PK unit).
No PK, no playoffs. No Price, no playoffs.
Go Gainey Go!!
Go Subbie Go!!
Already done, a few years back. #23 hangs proudly from the rafters of the Bell Center.
I've spent some time responding to threads outside the Habs board over the last couple of days (polls, trades, main-board), and have really been amazed by the unbridled hate that he gets from a lot of fans.
I understand that Subban is a tough player to play against, and I'm sure he's pretty annoying as well, but I mean this guy in 6 months has polarized people like rarely any other player.
There is some envy in there also...the kid has alot of talent, and it's showing in his first full season...if he was with the Leafs, the coverage he would be getting would be insane....
The worst part is, the babies will whine about this interview. There are so many whiners in the NHL today, it's gotten quite sad. So many babies who whine and cry in the media and don't back **** up.
As always, Cherry follows with the debating skills of an 8-year-old....
While I'd like to see that, Gainey won't do it because he doesn't like and/or need the spotlight. Everyone in hockey knows that Burke is an attention ***** and he'll take every opportunity to get some media time.

That's the other big-headed Irish GM of Vancouver and Toronto.
As to PK. If Gainey is already drawing comparisons to Chileos, I can care less what anyone else says (especially that cartoon figure cherry). PK is already a star calibre player and I see him being better than Markov in a few years
I must say that while I never thought of the comparison between Subban and Chelios, it is one that I like. For those who weren't old enough back then, Chelios was also hated by many other teams/players and we know the rest.

In some ways yes. In some ways no. PK and Markov are two different breeds of player. Markov is the type who goes unnoticed for years, under-rated. But that's because he controls the game quietly.
Wait, Gainey finally gets it... why doesn't his replacement?
You missed his point. It's not about needing some reinforcements, it's about PK not being intimidated. What most of the opposing players whining about PK consider cockiness, Gainey sees it as courage and confidence.
Gainey goes on to compare Subban to Chelios, I think that's the best comparison I've ever heard... In terms of impact on the ice, and their skillset (when Chelly was younger) are insanely similar.
Before we continue rambling on about race with regard to people 's opinion of PK,remember that a lot of people hated Chelios when he started out.
Edit: see some of the other folks have covered this as well, thus showing their age.

Chelios was a lot dirtier than PK and also a trouble maker off the ice. If PK can reach Chelios skill level he'll be much better than Chelios ever was. The main board thread is hilarious, I've reached my boiling point with Bruin fans, calling Gainey an idiot. I started using the ignore feature it's the only way to deal with them.

My point is this : Gainey's old teams, the players that developed into franchise components all had team toughness around them. Chelios could stick up for himself, but he didn't have to, management made sure their investments were protected.
For some reason, BG and current management have forgotten what made them winners. So while they pretend Nilan, McPhee, Ewen and the host of other tough players aren't important, the fans know different.
Keep letting players lay into Subban, mouth him off, ruin his confidence etc etc.. and it won't be much of a surprise how this all ends. I think he can handle it, but no team lets their future stars go through this much attention, mostly negative.
Its cowardly, and I hate it. It sickens me to see how this franchise has turned its back on the most successful hockey system ever implemented. That balance of toughness, and finesse.. all while building a team of players who bleed the CH, no matter what country they are from.
Not sure if somebody talked about it already, but seems that Gainey admitted that it was time for him to leave 'cause he was not in sync with what was going on anymore. Said that he realized he made some good moves but really bad ones as well....
Is this interview somewhere? Would have been nice to have that kind of interview where a guy totally put his ego aside and tell it like it is.
The whinefest in the PK Subban topic on the main board is just too funny.
I didn't even go in that thread, knowing oh too well what to expect. Had message boards been as popular back then, Chris Chelios would have received the same treatment.
