Souray, Anybody?

Puck-rakers is reporting that the Oilers have placed Sheldon Souray on re-entry waivers (link)

I think this could be a "heads you lose, tails you lose" for our embattled GM. If he doesn't pick up Souray and one of the teams behind us does, he gets blasted for not making the move. If the CBJ does claim SS at half-off, he is still a big chunk of salary for next year.

I think if you believe this team has a realistic shot at making the playoffs, you have to go for it. I am trying very hard to believe that, but can't quite get there yet ....

Nope. The guy has no game, from all reports. If he wasn't signed past this year, he'd be worth it, but the 2.7 or whatever next year is pretty terrible to absorb, especially if it hinders going after the bigger name C or PMDs.

I would agree with the Dispatch's Hunter and say that the wrong move would be worse than no move. GMSH has stuck to his guns thus far, and I would genuinely be disappointed if he panicked and did something to jeopardize the future unless it was a sure thing. Souray aint a sure thing.

Only way I'd take him is in a trade for Commodore if Commie is never playing here again, but I don't do that deal if I'm Edmonton...and GMSH would probably rather buy him out than add a pick to get someone like Souray.

The talk about 'having to go for it' regarding Souray reminds me of my mom going to an outlet mall. She always has to get SOMEthing, simply because it's on sale, whether she needs it or not...

This video is a bit over used on this site. But in regards to Souray being a Blue Jacket, it sums up my feelings perfectly.

I hope we don't do this. We already have one bad contract in the minors to deal with this off season.

We need to avoid Souray like the plague. A bloated contract is the last thing this team needs.

I'd want the Souray from 1-2 years ago. From what I've heard, it's unlikely that he'll ever return to that form.

Fixed, considering Commodore and Huselius among others. I would have said yes to Souray even earlier this year, but consider me to be part of the 'Please stay away, Souray' crowd now.

Souray has a whale of a shot and a whole lot of nasty, but he's slower then Commodore, prone to injury and trouble in the Clubhouse. At half-salary he's overpaid.

An useless player, slow, his defense is tragical. Why? We need a moving defensman. So is Sheldon it? No.

750k this year and one more year at 2.25 million isn't horribly bloated.

I'm not opposed to getting him. We've needed a guy like him for years and while he isn't perfect, he has a lot of the qualities we've been looking for in a defensemen since the 1st season. But I'd only like to see him here as a last resort.

Hoard budget space and get a FA that still has some game left, even if he's a one year stop gap. Not sure we have to go this scratch-and-dent.

Pass.

I'd probably pass on claiming Souray unless we can dump Commie somehow. I would do a Souray-Commodore trade. Either one could end up being a buy-out, but we know Commie is done here, so it might be worth seeing if Souray could at least provide a small contribution.

I like the fact that Souray only has 1 year left on his contract, compared to Commie's two. Without taking the time to do the actual math, I think the buyout of Souray would be a bit cheaper (and spread out over 2 years instead of 4) than Commodore. Perhaps Souray get re-energized by the trade, knowing this is his last shot to prove the critics wrong and re-cement his legacy. Edmonton might think the same thing about Commodore.

But, of course, the only way a trade can happen is if no one claims Souray.

On a related note, should the CBJ be putting Commodore on re-entry waivers again to see if there are any desperate takers?

I'd certainly prefer Commodore to Souray. But we'll see.

Souray has only scored 3 goals in 26 games in the AHL this year.

What suggests that he's still able to play at an NHL level?
