Upshall sounds excited to be coming here ... hopefully he's a good fit. This trade could very well make us a playoff team - we've proven we can play without Klesla recently, this is like adding another forward for a non-roster player

Not saying that freeing up the money isn't a plus, but I'd still feel much better about it if Upshall re-signs here.
The net positive is the freeing of cap space, which can be used for Upshall or someone else. This is exactly the type of move that I have been asking for out of Howson.

This wasn't selling, this was a smart move getting yourself out of the hole you had dug for yourself.

I like Klesla but he probably fits in better with Phx then the CBJ at this point. Lepisto could be the hidden gem in the this deal.

It's not sexy, but this is an A move IMHO.

I would not be surprised to see Howson start working on a deal with Upshall within the next two or three weeks. I get the feeling he will fit in very well in the locker room and everyone will appreciate his hard work at 20 goals. This is exactly the kind of guy we want when playing Nashville.

edit - quick paraphrase at best, by the way.

I heard him on Sportsnet.

He is excited to go to Columbus, says he hasn't developed as well as he would have liked and this is a new chance. He knows Nash from Juniors. Good friends with Umberger.

"Columbus is a good, skilled, young team. We went up 2 on them last Friday and they came back and hung 5 on us and kicked out butts."

"Excited to be a Jacket for the next few months."

He sounds like he's in shock. He heard about the trade from Sportsnet before Maloney called him.

Klesla was interviewed too. Was gracious about his time in Columbus, sad to see it end. Happy to go to a good team.

Meh, don't read too much into it. A few months is all that's written at the moment.

Campoli to Hawks. Still nothing on Liles, though Buffalo is expected to make an offer.

To be clear, I'm not saying it's a bad move - just that how good it is depends on the chances of retaining Upshall after this season.

Probably 2nd or 3rd line, as they work to ice 3 scoring lines. Now the Jackets need a Malhotra type center for this. Perhaps MacKenzie can fill the need and move Pahlsson down?

We could let Upshall walk and it would still be an A move.

This is the first step in the overhaul of our defense.

Upshall is not relevant at all once the season is over. He was a UFA. We could have got him as a UFA with or without the trade.

What is relevant is the cap space and how it is used, whether that be on Upshall or a d-man, a center, whatever. If it is used unwisely (i.e. on another Ethan Moreau), then the trade's only value is Upshall and Lepisto's trade from now until the season ends.

Campoli is on Sportsnet and neither the Blackhawks nor the Senators have talked to him. He's clearly frustrated.

We can also use it to get a dman this summer.

still would like to see a deal in this last hour. as was stated earlier, we didn't address our needs with this move.. even if it was a substantial win.

what you're missing is even if we don't retain Upshall we can spend our 3 Million per year on something better than Rusty or Upshall.

With this 3 Million you have several UFA's on the team at the end of this year, which would free us up about 5-7 Million. You could use this to go after someone like Brad Richards.

If Upshall resigns for a reasonable rate - awesome. If he doesn't - we spend the money getting good talent.

Reminds me of Tugnutt finding out he was traded while using the bathroom in his hotel room during a road trip.

Penner for Teubert a first round pick and a 3rd round pick

I guess once Tambellini realized the Kings really would not trade Schenn, he got serious.

Here come the Oilers. I figured they would be a late seller.

I wouldn't be shocked if we see a Smid to the Jackets deal.
