RE Sestito

Some of the reports by the SPR posters seemed to indicate that he didn't seem to know when to and when not to drop the gloves. He really needed to work on his touch and game feel but all he wanted to do was fight.

Have not actually watched so this is not a first person report just what I took out of the posted reports.

IMO today was RBI double, sign upshall and it's a home run. I was worried being buyers was really going hurt the team. But GMSH did good and i think we have a good shot at making some good moves this offseason.

That said I still maintain my position we won't make the playoffs this year.

Twitter may or may not have led to his being traded, but face it folks - our organizational depth up the middle sucks big time. This move helps to address it.

Kind of disappointed to see him go, though. I liked the energy that he brought.

Why are most people bashing the Sestito trade? Yeah, he'll be missed, but the stats on his return player:
Drafted 3rd rd of last year's draft
plays center
18 yrs old and 6-2 194lbs
55pts in 68 games in the Q

Looks like a good prospect for us.

It seems this trade is actually with Philly. Bobby Mac corrected it.

It seems to me that we are moving more and more toward players with good hockey instincts. And unfortunately, Sestito did not have good instincts. Same with Klesla whom I always perceived to be a bit slow at recognizing what was going on around him.

@Leek

Howson has positioned himself better, budget wise, for next off season.

Now, we'll have to see what he does with it.

I'm hoping he doesn't go on a spending spree for long term deals, like last time, unless the player is truly a fit. But I do hope he'll be more active at the draft and leading up to the FA period.

Then fill in his holes with stop-gaps, if need be.

I give him on A on his moves. I give him, overall, a C during the period (last 2 months). He missed a couple of reasonable pickups that could have helped the team.

And no, just because I say it was a good move that means I didn't like Klesla. With his injury situation and his salary, it was probably time to go a different direction.

Presser is over. Howson liked Chaput in last years draft and Philly liked Sestito so he said it made sense. He also said the price for the high end players were too high.

He has 22g, 33a, 55pts, 84 pim, and +19 in 55 games. He has won 55.77% of his faceoffs.

It seemed to me that Klesla was improving over time, but it was almost a sure thing that he'd be injured. Some of that injury history seems to have been bad luck, but whatever the cause, the impact is similar. When he hit the wall in the STL game a few weeks back, I remember thinking, "Here we go again." I won't be surprised if he doesn't get his game back completely this season.

I'm pretty happy with this trade, since we've been doing OK without Rusty as it is, and I think we can use the budget room, though Rusty was about third on the list of contracts I wanted to see go away. If he'd stayed healthy, it wasn't an atrocious contract. I'm looking forward to Upshall, who could be a great add, and I'm intrigued by Lepisto. This strikes me as a typical Howson move. I'm disappointed that we didn't add critical pieces to put the team over the top, but never expected to make that kind of move by the TDL anyway. I would be surprised to make the playoffs; this move wasn't enough to push us over the tipping point.
