The optimist in me is happy that Bartulis is getting good ice time now. If someone goes down before or in the playoffs, we have someone with significant game action as the 7th dman.
I don't mind Barts playing for 2 games while O'Donnell is out. We get to see if he can still step up and replace O'Donnell for next season. Can't wait to see him on the ice again and see what he can do again (it's been so long, something might of changed for better or for worse for him).

O'Donnell is out 10-14 days. gonna be more then a couple of games.

Exactly. We can afford to make sure guys don't come back too soon. If it takes 6 games for O'D, that's fine.
Same with Betts. In fact, I'd love to see a Carcillo-Powe-Zherdev 4th line this week - would certainly have some speed...
OD said the whole time he could play the next game, we were just playing it safe and sitting him.
We can't afford a call-up without moving Zherdev/Carcillo
Sure you can, it's a per-day addition.
Where did this myth come from that we can't call up players? The Canucks have been doing it the entire season with less cap space. The Flyers have an extra $900K that no one else knew about until now.
apparently holmgren wasnt too worried about bartulis being anything serious, and the feeling after the game was the OD is probably going to play on thursday
Holmgren is the eternal optimist when it comes to injuries so I would take him with a grain of salt. For him having HIV is great because it's not full blown AIDS....

Not really the way it works... I don't think you get pro-rated salary rates for guys you call up from the AHL. So, Versteeg's per-day is relatively high, but that gets distributed across all league days for us based on only the portion of the contract that we're paying for (928K). Whereas if you pulled up a guy like Wellwood, I don't think "banked" cap space is applicable to him since he's been under contract with the Flyers the entire year (just so happened to be in the minors).
Obviously this is less of an issue with those types of players normally.... so haven't worried about it as much.
EDIT: And, yes, we can call people up because we have Lappy's LTIR cushion, but it's really important we avoid that this year given the bonus situation.
