Depth D-man to Philly

With Sean O'Donnell's recent "tweaking" of his knee in NY, it leaves the question will the Flyers need an extra defenseman if something more serious were to happen. Matt Walker's been waived and Laviolette hasn't shown much confidence in Bartulis, especially judging from the SCF.

Who from your team could be traded?

Flyers' expendables: Zherdev, Carcillo, Walker

Carcillo for Vandermeer?

Smid's also available, don't want Zherdev though. Maybe Nodl + 2nd (If you guys have one).

No.

And no to Nodl and a 2nd.

Basically if we're looking for a dman, it'll be a vet with cup experience on the cheap. Basically a 7th dman.

Wallin could be had for relatively cheap from SJ. Plus he played for Lavi in Carolina, so he knows the system.

Wallin has an awful cap hit for what he's worth.

But in reference to the post about a 7th Dman w/ Cup experience, that's the kind of guy you want. At this time of year, with the later trade deadline, knowing a coach's system is a huge advantage. His cap hit is doable, with only minor tweaking to the roster, if in fact a guy with his experience is needed.

Did you ignore the word "cheap"?

No just took it to mean someone who could be had for cheap, which I stated in the reply, and Wallin is a UFA next year. Given your criteria, your pool of available players is pretty shallow.

Cheap on the contract side of things, as well as cheap to acquire. We have limited cap space, and into next season we can't really afford to fill up our space. Holmgren said his main focus this offseason is Ville Leino.

Flyers still have Bartulis. This is why they have 7 defensemen on the roster. O'Donnell's injury doesn't sound serious, so there is no urgency to acquire someone who will be in the press box next week.

If Zherdev is expendable, that would work for both teams in terms of cap. Again, there are very few guys who meet your criteria so something will have to give. You could get Boynton on the cheap from both perspectives but why would you want him? So you're left with the Wallins and Commodores of the world and Wallin is a pending UFA.

Foote for Zherdev = done.

Avs are building a team of former top-5-overall picks.

Zherdev fits in this,

Who in their right mind would trade Zherdev for Wallin though? And as GKJ said, it'll be for a week if anything.

Edit: @ Hover, no way dude.

It'd be Wallin + picks (s) obviously even though Zherdev's value has fallen way off from what it once was.

The Ducks might give up Lilja. He's cheap, very good on the PK, physical and a shot blocking beast. He won a cup in detroit and has plenty of Playoff experience. He might be more valuable to us than other teams but I'd ask for a 4th. If you're desperate a 3rd (it'll be a late one anyway).

I'd hate to give him up though. I'd prefer to give up Brookbank. Also cheap, will stand up for his teammates and is decent in a limited role. But he lacks the experience you're looking for.

No, he didn't.

Wanna know why I know this? Because Vandermeer is crap and doesn't win anything other than the award for biggest turn-over machine to be on the Flyers in the past decade.

Vandermeer is probably a downgrade from Bartulis, at least in my opinion...he was terrible as a flyer a few years ago.

Flyers have always had a knack for latching onto old-timers and pylons incapable of keeping up with the pace of the game (remember Hatcher? Rathje? Therien? Etc.).

It seems Craig Rivet would be perfect for them.

Vandermeer hasn't played for the Blackhawks since we traded for him in December of 2007.

Vandermeer lost in the Cup Finals with the Flames to the Lightning.

You are probably thinking of Nick Boynton...

well...since the OP is asking for a cheap depth d-man...you might as well resign yourself to the fact that a cheap depth d-man is probably going to have some issues such as turnovers, or slow-footed..or lacks physicallity, or loses every battle along the boards, or can't pass the puck....etc.

You may think he's crap, but I'd be willing to bet there's a lockerful of Flyers who would love to have a player like Vandermeer for a cup run.

Maybe you can get Boynton...who I'm sure has many crap-tendencies you could point out.
