An offensive defenseman > scoring wingers.

The value is decent there. Niskanen is the key, if he can find a niche in Pittsburgh, they won. If he continues to regress, it's not that bad for Pittsburgh or Dallas. Dallas needs a puck mover. Still, you have to wonder if they should have gone into the EJ sweepstakes, if there was an EJ sweepstakes.

With Benn, Eriksson and Morrow, you have to figure they thought they were ok at wings, but needed a D. Have to wonder if this means they re-sign Langenbrunner.

Maybe a change of scenery will help Niskanen. He showed great potential before and had a pretty good rookie + sophomore year, and then for whatever reason he's regressed these past two seasons

Stewart >> Neal.

I would say Neal is near identical to Kulemin

Yeah, I'm sure Joe Niewendyk was checking HF boards between shifts in the heritage classic to see what all of us knuckleheads had to say about Neal & Goligoski..

I don't really like it from a Dallas perspective. Again.. I didn't want to break up our top 9 forwards.

But moving Niskanen is a bit of a plus for us. We've freed up another $1.625 million to re-sign Richards, too.

Good trade for both teams. Dallas fans, don't get too upset. Goligoski can effectively play top 4 minutes now and QB the PP. Plus, he's not finished developing. He's on a great contract and is still a RFA at the end of his deal.

Going into the playoffs, I want to see...

Kunitz - Crosby - Dupuis/Sterling
Neal - Staal - TK

Next season...

Kunitz - Crosby - XXX
Neal - Malkin - XXX
Cooke - Staal - Kennedy

I'm not sold on Niskanen. The Pens should be in the market for another dman.

There are quite a few good players to hold your hand in Pittsburgh

I find it very difficult to believe that no other team around the NHL could have bettered that offer.

I have a feeling that Neal's $3.5M salary next year (along with Niskanen's rediculous $1.75M) had a lot to do with this deal for Dallas.

Opens up space to resign Richards?

As for Neal's production, I wouldn't expect a massive increase. Before Crosby returns he'll probably struggle actually, but even with Crosby he'll go from Richards and Eriksson as linemates to Crosby and Dupuis, somewhat of a wash there.

Odds are that Niskanen is going to be paired with a better player in Pittsburgh than he was in Dallas, so that may well help.

Niskanen just seems like a toss-in that Dallas just didn't want and for Pittsburgh it means we don't have to go out and get a new #6/7 guy for the remainder of the season. He's shown flashes before so he's not a bad toss-in.

Goligoski is getting severely underrated here. I don't think this is as lopsided as people seem to think. 25 year-old PMDs who can/are playing 22 minutes a night and run a power play generally aren't the cheapest asset in the league to acquire, especially not when they're on a sweetheart deal.

Dallas didn't even really need a PPQB, they have Richards who likes to play there.
