LOL, imagine we package Niskanen + a Pick to Columbus for Voracek

Or better yet, Niskanen for Filatov

Based on this trade.. i think the Pens really were making a play for Stewart, but got outbid. Neal isn't bad compensation. Great addition, and good trade for both teams.

Any LTIR implications if Malkin comes back? I suspect they can put Sid on LTIR?
Out of that list, my guess is Kennedy (RFA, probably something around a 1.2M deal), Adams (like 600K again), Conner (like 650-750K) will defintiely be back. Other than that, we have Jeffrey, Letestu, Tangradi, Johnson, Vitale all ready to contribute next season. Hell even Tim Wallace looked great against the Hawks yesterday (once in a blue moon game probably but still). I feel pretty confident we'll be okay.

This is a tremendous deal. I really am pleased with how much value RS got for Goose.

I have a feeling Niskanen isn't very good, because if he is it's a complete snow job. That being said he'll be on the bottom pair and they can dispense with him later if they want so I don't care. Again props to Goligoski for his contribution here and I do like him, but this is almost surreal. We actually got a legit scoring winger!!!!!!!

Well, its on the Pens site. Neal and Niskanen for Goligoski straight up. Nothing else from us. Niskanen must have negative value.

There's really no reason not to make a deal like that.

He may flourish playing bottom minutes and being tutored under our d-core. Its tough to say really.

The truth is that Goligoski wasn't a bottom pairing guy. He had top 2 potential, but the Pens are loaded at D this season. So they dealt from strength and picked up the best winger they could. I'm just happy we didn't lose anything else - like a Talbot, Kennedy, or Cooke. It still keeps a few doors open on deadline day if an opportunity falls into Shero's lap.

Let's not go crazy sucking Shero's ****. The guy still hasn't gotten a young, quality winger, and ...

Oh wait ... I guess we can scratch that argument.

I don't see a whole ton of the Stars, but I regard Niskanen as an okay #5 or #6 defenseman. I think Goligoski's a good #4 or okay #3, so there is a dropoff there. Still, Niskanen's better than Lovejoy, so there is some use for him. His offensive upside could be rekindled here once Crosby and Malkin are back to be passed to. My hope is that Despres kicks down the door and takes a spot next year.

Next year:

Kunitz-Crosby-Neal
Jeffrey-Staal-Malkin
Cooke-Letestu-Kennedy
Adams-XXX-XXX

Martin-Letang
Orpik-Michalek
Despres-Engelland/Niskanen

That's a hell of a forward group.

WOW!! I don't know anything about Niskanen but the fact we only gave up Gogo for Neal is crazy! Granted we added a bit of cap next year but is Nisk can even be a solid #5 this is huge!

So we're getting Sid back then since Shero is making moves?

Going against the grain, I'll say this is a very fair deal. Of course, I'm one of the few around here that thinks Goligoski can be an all-star caliber defender. The rate at which he's learning the defensive game at the NHL level is outstanding. He's going to be much better than a lot of you think.

Neal is exactly what this roster needed. Niskanen isn't very good at anything, but he had a pretty good rookie season and has decent tools, so perhaps a change of scenery will do him some good. He's pretty much just a bonus, as I think Neal for Goligoski is as fair as it gets.

I think this is a move you make anyways - it makes long-term sense to add a 23-year old winger with 35ish goal potential.

Good trade for both teams, IMO.
I say we convincingly owned them on this one though. Gogo's a guaranteed 40-point per season blue liner that can QB a PP rather well, but we still ended up nabbing a potential 30 goal scorer in Neal, who's still only 23 years old, and a solid stay at home blueliner in Niskanen.
