Why Edmonton does this:
Clarkson brings some grit and toughness to a young team. He also has so offensive upside. He's a bit overpaid in the eyes of Devils fans but Edmonton is far from the cap limit and could pay a couple mil for a Canadian born player.
Why NJ does this:
The Devils would shed 1.4 mil in cap space and continue to distance themselves from their cap issues. They also get a player who is a speed demon and a change of scenery is a bit overdue for Cogliano. A new home may be good for his potential similar to the way Grabner has recently found his game. Also, they get a 5th rounder because why the hell not?
I think cogs is the better player, and then we give up a 5th as well...so...No ty I like cogs, don't think he needs to be traded expecially not for this guy i'd rather get a 1st round pick like we turned down for him last draft.
I like Clarkson and all, but no thanks. Cogs has played very well recently and is starting to carve out a role with the Oil. He has become our best PKer. Clarkson on the other hand makes way more money and has regressed. I'm not saying he can't turn it all around, but I'd rather keep Cogs (our PK is actually starting to turn it around).
How about a D upgrade (although it would see you add salary):
Gilbert for Clarkson? You add 1.33 mil to your cap but gain a 2nd pairing hybrid Dman (good skater but not a full fledged PMD, good shot blocker but not a full fledged stay-home guy). Playoffs are still a reach, but within sight, and this definitely makes you guys better this year and beyond.
If David Clarkson is available (doubt it), the Blackhawks had better be in on that trade. The 'hawks lacked grit last year and it should have cost them (lucky in Nashville and Philly). This year, they have zero grit and it may cost them a playoff spot.
New Jersey can have whatever they want outside of Morin, and they would have to take a contract back, so take Chicago's 1st and 2 of their seconds as well.
How about:
Chi:
Shawn Lalonde
Victor Stalberg
Chicago's 1st rounder in 2011
Chicago's 2cd rounder in 2011 (conditional - 'hawks must make playoffs)
(waive Nick Boynton)
NJ
David Clarkson
Conditional 2cd round pick in 2011 (if 'hawks dont make playoffs)
As far as looking at this sort of deal, Stalberg is nothing but salary going the other way. Lalonde is a decent D prospect, but the 'hawks have depth there. 2011 isn't viewed as a great draft. The 2 picks might be too much, but if there's a chance Clarkson is available, overpay so NJ doesn't reconsider.

We really can't afford to take on salary given Parise's contract situation. Plus we have too many average defensemen on our roster.

I don't think he's available in the real world, but I don't think the fans would mind sending him off in exchange for something useful + cap relief.
How come he's worth the 15th overall in a strong draft year like lasts ON DRAFT DAY??
You're delirious...

I'd do this. While the Devils are certainly not a "slow" team, they could use some speed up front. Cogs would be great on the Devils, I think.
While Clarky is a fan favorite, he is rather overpaid, and, like some of the other fan favorites in NJ, has to be shed in order for the Devils to get good free agents and win something. I think he'd fit the Oilers mold to a tee.
I'd do this. Clarkson would be a perfect upgrade for our 4th line. I like the 125 hits this season. Too bad he doesn't pk but his GAON/60 is respectable. Might be the first time I said yes to a proposal as is.
Absolutely no use for another undersized foward in New Jerersy. Josefson and Tedenby will be filling those roles and I'm sure in short time they'll both be able to match or exceed the 30 points Cogliano is putting up.
No thanks from Edmonton. I like Clarkson, but Lamoriello gave him a contract he isn't living up to. Cogliano also has more upside. Cogs for Clarkson and a 2nd or 3rd and I'm interested.
Has a thread on HF ever had plenty of agreements from both fanbases as well as plenty of disagreements from both fanbases? Does that suggest fair value?

I call BS. I nvever heard anything about that and i have close friends in the oilers. I know Hemskys and Eberles names were being thrown around by Boston and CLB but we said to take a hike but if cogs name came up it was likely Tambi bringing him up and getting laughed at. Last season Brule made cogs look useless as a pivot any longer.
In fact coming into this camp Cogs had to fight for his own job and only won it due to the fact he has a 1 way and others have 2 ways. He has come along but hes not 15th overall worthy. Keep in mind 15th overall from this years draft will likely be a cogs in 2 years so maybe you get that now. Theres not a tonne of highend choices in the 12-50 range.

He wasn't, or he would have been traded for one. The rumor I heard was that the Oilers offered Cogs up for the 15th overall, and there was no interest.
