Ok, so we have a cultural Russian born in America to a Belarusian father with a Ukrainian last name who's lived in Belarus, Russia, America, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Canada.

Go globalization!
A genuine World Citizen, if there has ever been one.
He speaks perfect Russian however and thats what he uses to speak at home. Why would a Belarussian with Russian/American citzenship (That kinda proves it right there) speak Russian exclusively at home? If Alex Galchenyuk Sr was good enough to play for the Russian national team instead of the Belarussian, you can bet he would've.
You can't debate his Belarussian heritage, but he's certainly Russian now.
well, he speaks russian, so what? i speak perfect russian too. no wonder, cause it's one of the two official languages in belarus. at the same time, i don't consider myself russian despite all those close ties to russia.
Oh yes you can. Galchenyuk is ukrainian name not belarussian.
well, surnames with this 'ukrainian' ending '-yuk' are pretty common and sound quite belarussian in the south of belarus, in such areas as polesye, etc.
Just a heads up: Sarnia Radio (CHOK) informed the public that Alex Galchenyuk is expected to undergoe surgery on his injured knee next week and will probably be out until March.
Some teams going to get a very good player outside of the top 10 because IMO theres no chance he goes top 10 anymore.

Galchenyuk IS Russian though so that doesn't matter. I don't think Galchenyuk has ever at any point lived in Belarus (But he has speant significant time in Russia).
All moot anyway now since I guess he has made his decision to represent the US but I'm sure the Russians will still pressure him.
Maybe. But in this strong a draft? Missing an entire season, especially at this age has strong consequences and despite his talent, it's going to hurt him big time. I think he'll go more 10-15 now, he should be back in time for playoffs but teams will be taking a risk taking him top 10.

I agree 10-15 seems more realistic now.
Too many players trending upwards. This draft is very strong so it's not like when Connolly went #4, and Cowen went #9, there is just too much depth some teams might not want to take a risk
It's too bad what happened to Galchenyuk. I thought for sure he was Top 5 material. I still do, but as the games start to pile up and he becomes pushed to the back of scouts minds, someone may get a steal there. If there is something that will keep Galchenyuk propped up is there is a lack of gamebreaking centers. Its pretty much just him and Grigorenko and maybe Girgensens...and thats about it.

Tough break for Alex in his draft year.
When did he injure his knee? Pre-season?
That sucks for Galchenyuk. He was poised for a big year this year, and likely a top ten selection in the NHL draft next June.
I wonder if he'll be a Connolly-like prospect, where a team will pick him high despite his injury.

I believe it was a pre-season game in Windsor. He was sakting around the net and he caught a rut in the ice?
That's a huge blow for Sarnia. I know they're 8-2-1, but the real issue here is Galchenyuk and whether he'll even be in game shape for the playoffs in March.
I feel really sorry for the kid. I was really excited to see what him and Yakupov could do in their draft year. Guess we'll have to wait until the playoffs.
This is a scary situation for teams. It reminds me a ton of Milan Michalek's situation. I think I would pass until the risk is outweighed by the reward.

And this is something I don't get. IMO injures shouldn't effect (except concussions and a few other life threatening injures) a teams decision from a people to another.
He's out this long because of the recovery time, not because he's injury prone or his knee's of glass.

Somebody in the mid-first round is going to be very lucky. I'd love to see my team snag a pick just outside the top 10 and select Galchenyuk.
