The more I watch this, the less convinced I am that this was not intentional. His hand shoves his head into the stanchion ... ugh, I hate Chara.

Glad to hear it sounds like MacPac will be okay.

It seems the consensus from most analysts so far, there should be no suspension. Players from both sides said it was unintentional. Chara was just finishing the hit, yes, but what it comes down to is that finishing the hit was not necessary. The puck is long gone from the area. I think this is something the NHL needs to consider in the evaluation of what to do with this.

If a player makes the decision to do something that is unnecessary, even though the intent to injure may be unintentional, and it puts another player in a vulnerable position to the point where they could end a career or even a life, it is something the league needs to discipline in order to distinguish from the game.

People can argue intent, which is fine. But some players have been suspended despite intent. Is the responsibility on Chara to know that there is the partition of the glass there? That's a bad situation to be in for both players

I'm of the opinion that the play was unnecessary. Chara should be hit with a few games.

Most of the media that seems to be commenting on this are Boston and Toronto based, who have shown a consistent agenda against Montreal.

There is no way this isn't suspendable. First, the puck is 50 feet away. Then:

1) Chara looks up, sees where he is.
2) Hip checks Pacioretty into the boards.
3) Shoves his head into the stanchion with his glove.
4) Doesn't look back to check how he is.
5) Blamed Pacioretty for leaning into the glass in postgame.

Chara is slime. The regular season should be the minimum.

Thing is....you're basically giving Chara rest for the playoffs. Although many people said the same about Pronger with his stomping of Kesler, and the Ducks crashed and burned, basically.

Suspend him for playoffs?

(kinda. If Pac is brain damaged, I'm serious.)

Yeah, I know. That's why I don't want to see 8-10. 10 gives Chara 3 or 4 games to get back up to speed after 1 month of rest.

Though, the more and more I look at it, the more I'm with the Habs fans on this one. That might be too easy to take their side, obviously. I think just as you're responsible for your stick, you're also responsible for being aware of your surroundings on the ice. And that's even before whether or not/how much malice there is in this.

It'll be like 4 games. I usually like watching this stuff in games. Just adds fuel to the rivalry.

I also am now leaning towards Hab fan thinking after watching it a few times + add in Chara/Max P history of chirping and rough stuff

At the very least it was a wreckless/dangerous hit by Chara on a player in vulnerable place on ice. He has played hockey long enough to know the dangers in that area of ice with regards to the dividing glass

Why in the ****ing hell doesn't NHL get rid off of those stanchions and glasses between the benches? There has to be a way to remove them and keep the area safe for people outside the rink. Like right there in Bell Centre the glass is barely two yards wide, yeah there's the tunnel to dressing rooms behind it but how about putting the glass few feet behind the boards or something?

Also there should be more stuffing in those stanchions making them softer, how many times a player has to get injured before someone reacts?

Don't know if Chara intentionally pushed Pacioretty's head to the stanchion but if did... that's really aiming to end the other guy's career. If not, I blame all on NHL or whoever is responsible for those extra glasses.

Yeah, I don't think the intent was malicious, but the league needs to send a message that you must be aware of where you are on the ice when you deliver a hit. Getting your head whacked into that partition is just as bad as a blindside hit to the head from the perspective of danger. No intent to injure, but ignorance is no excuse. 3 games imo.

Zajac's four games from tying Ken Daneyko's Devils franchise record of 389 consecutive games played.

That's how I see it. Let's forget whether it was intentional or not, he should be suspended for delivering a hit in an unnecessary and dangerous situation.

That was a dirty hit IMO. I don't know how Chara won't be suspended.

Unless you either glass in the benches or do away with the glass, there is going to be a corner someone can hit their head on.

I bet the padding does get thicker now.

I'm not sure, but I know if he had displaced that vertebrae, he could have easily been killed or a quad/paraplegic.

So much for the NHL making up for its failure to punish Cooke after he hit Savard.
