▶ WEDNESDAY GAMES:◀ TUESDAY GAMES:■ GENERAL

□ PENGUINS▶ SHARKS◀ CAPITALS■ GENERAL

The Penguins lost to the Washington Capitals 1-0 Monday, but that wasn't the news of the day.

Pittsburgh traded defenseman Alex Goligoski to the Dallas Stars in return for left wing James Neal and defenseman Matt Niskanen. For the Penguins, Neal is clearly the gem in this deal.
He is only 23 and a power forward that, according to coach Dan Bylsma, the Penguins have coveted for quite some time. They picture him playing on the left wing with either Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin well into the future.
Neal has 21 goals this season, the third time he has eclipsed the 20-goal plateau in his three-year career and is expected to have a big impact on L1 right away. Niskanen is a former first-round pick who the Penguins believe will be able to fill Goligoski's spot on the third defense pairing, but remains a question mark.
Both of the Penguins' new players are expected to be in uniform Wednesday against San Jose.

Despite having a good effort, the Pens simply didn't have the firepower to put a puck past Washington goalie Michal Neuvirth.
Alexander Ovechkin was the only player from Washington who looked really interested in the contest, firing eight shots on net and notching his 24th goal of the season on a power play during the 2nd period.
The Penguins outshot Washington 39-24. Oh, well...

INJURY REPORT

The Red Cross released its most recent set of updates:
Center Sidney Crosby remains out indefinitely with concussion symptoms. Center Evgeni Malkin is out for the year with torn ACL, MCL and YMCA on his right knee.
Right winger Arron Asham and left winger Eric Tangradi iare also out indefinitely because of concussions.

Chris Kunitz appears close to returning to the lineup. He is skating again and reported that his lower-body injury has improved. There is an outside chance that he will return today.
Forwards Mark Letestu and Dustin Jeffrey are recovering well from knee injuries and might be close to returning. Both were cleared and have been skating after practice for the past few days, but no return date was set yet.
Right winger Nick Johnson is dealing with an upper-body injury, but was put on Injury Reserve.

Defenseman Paul Martin sat out Monday's game because of neck soreness. He was pushed from behind into the boards in Chicago Sunday and, though he returned to that game, wasn't well enough to face the Capitals and isn't well enough to play against the Sharks.
Ben Lovejoy replaced him against the Caps and coach Dan Bylsma said recently acquired Matt Niskanen might take his place on the first power play unit with Kris Letang. Lovejoy will play again.
Center Mike Comrie - that one... who had hip surgery - started to light skate recently. He's a bit far from returning or actually have a season debut, as you wish.
For details on injuries, check out Duck Paddy's Injury Thread.

Enforcer Eric Godard is in line for an automatic 10-game suspension for leaving the bench during the brawl against the Islanders.
Forward Ryan Craig and defenseman Brian Strait were re-assigned to AHL affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Forward Chris Conner changed his number to 16, leaving the 18 to James Neal. Niskanen will wear #2.
Also, the Penguins hired Chief Brody especially for this game.

□ SHARKS▶ PENGUINS◀ RED WINGS■ GENERAL

Joe Thornton netted his 300th career goal on a back hand tap in during a power play and cleared the way for a big win at Detroit last night.
The Sharks accomplished something they have never done before: swept the Detroit Red Wings in their famed Joe Louis Arena.
San Jose beat the Wings 4-3 with goals from Ryane Clowe on a breakaway and Devin Setoguchi lit the lamp twice. Goalie Antti Niemi made 35 of 38 saves.
"Team Teal" put up 43 shots on Jimmy Howard against the Red Wings and is now is 13-2-1 in their last 16 games heading into tonight's matchup with the Pens.
Dan Cleary also scored twice for Detroit and Henrik Zetterberg put final numbers at the end of the game with a power play goal that threatened the visitors win, but to no avail.

Defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic missed his first game of the season on Saturday as a result of suffering an upper-body injury early in the first period of his last game on February 17.
Vlasic came back for the Wings game and is available.

Goalie Antero Niittymaki, who suffered what the team termed "a new injury" during warmups on February 8, was placed on IR on Thursday.
Center Scott Nichol made the trip to Detroit and on to Pittsburgh and Calgary because thatís where trainer Ray Tufts and his staff will be.
He is recovering from an upper-body injury and is day-to-day.

Defenseman Ian White made his debut for the Sharks on Saturday against Colorado after getting dealt the day before.

On Monday, the Sharks recalled left winger John McCarthy from the Worcester Sharks, the teamís top development affiliate.
McCarthy already played 31 games this season, posting 4 points (2 Goals).

The game story can be summarized in 3 words:

James Neal AHHHHHHHHH.

I hope we can find a way to scrape out a win tomorrow. I didn't realize that we'd only won once in our last five games, and then after the Sharks game the next five appear to be on the road.

Hopefully the excitement of the new guys will rub off on the rest of the team and tomorrow can be one of those "win due to adrenaline" games before the boys hit the road.

Sadly our forward contingent who are injured are a better line up than who will dress. Glad to have Neal in the fold though. An to the OP, that's an excellent job with the thread, well done!

Hello, Sharks fan here.

So James Neal is a Penguin now. Wow.... WOWOWOW
Kind of scratching my head over here, but won't miss seeing him in Dallas uniform, that's for sure.

Anyway, may the best team win.
Good luck to the Penguins the rest of the season and with all the injuries.

The best team? Well right now that easily is you guys. I actually hope the lesser team today wins, which currently is us.

Sweet, all my classes tomorrow have been canceled, so tonight I can watch our new aquisition. Painful to look at our roster though, it looks like Belgium.

Sick GDT as always my friend!!!

As for the lines, is it really possible that Rupp drops back to the 4th line? I have a feeling that Sterling ends up there instead

Has anyone else noticed that we added two guys that have 120 Hits (Neal) and 97 Hits (Niskanen)...

Is it possible for our team to be any more of a physical force? Neal and Kuni become the BASH BROTHERS!

I can't remember the last time we played San Jose well.

Actually, I think I do. Martin Straka scored.

I hate how an entire forward lineup could be formed with those on IR.

Great GDT theme, King!

The Sharks say they don't need to hear our working class hero crap... Matt Cooke will make them listen. It's a little known fact that Cookie was actually the architect of Monday's deal, operating offline as Shero's advisor.

Thanks, guy on boat too small.

I'm so unimpress with lack of this Gif, unimpress.......

Edit:
Kinguin, as you have proven time & time again, my friend.

My only beef.

Bad luck has been bestowed on us ever since this happened.
