Hellebuyck perfect as UMass Lowell takes Hockey East crown

Despite not being able to score a goal until midway through the third period, UMass Lowell took the Hockey East Championship as its goalie, Connor Hellebuyck, stole the show.

Hellebuyck led the River Hawks to victory over Boston University, 1-0, Saturday night at the TD Garden.

The Commerce, MI native made timely saves all night, keeping the Boston University offensive attack at bay. The Winnipeg Jets prospect made 36 saves and kept the lethal Boston University power-play off the board, posting his fifth shutout of the season.

“Connor has been phenomenal, and you don’t win a championship without a great goalie,” UMass Lowell coach Norm Bazin said.… read more

I was pretty frustrated when the Jets went off the board and drafted him instead of a lot of better ranked goalies.

Looks like they knew what they were doing after all.

Hellebuyck continues to roll along this year. (http://goriverhawks.com/news/2014/3/...x?path=mhockey)

Recently named the Hockey East's top goalie he led the NCAA in sv% and GAA.

He started the Hockey East Championship with a 35-save shutout over Notre Dame this evening.

It's deja vu all over again.

Hellebuyck backstops UMass Lowell to another Hockey East championship. He stopped 35 and 30 shots to record shutout wins in the semi-final and final (unprecedented).

First player to win Hockey East playoff MVP back-to-back (and he did it as a Freshman and Sophomore).

His save % was 0.952 last year and 0.943 this season (so far).

I wonder if he signs this year. We really need some goalie turnover and people to step up.

I think there's incentive for him to sign and get to St. John's this year, ahead of Comrie next year. Otherwise one of them will have to head to the ECHL for playing time.
