Svatos claimed by Ottawa, Kotalik (re-entry), Zherdev, Colliton, and Rivet all clear
Zherdev on waivers is just ridiculous. You can't tell me there was no one out there willing to offer for him. Regardless of any personal or character issues, he is too talented to be on waivers. Mind boggling. No way he clears.
It makes absolutely no sense. I can't figure it out. A rental like Zherdev usually fetches a high draft pick, particularly when there are so many buyers in the market. The only way it makes sense is if the only offers came from other playoff teams in the East and the Flyers figured they rather see the Oilers or Islanders or something get him.
Did they even try to trade him? If this were a "value of board" who here would have said less than a fourth?
Crazy to think Holmgren couldn't work out a deal and get some kind of return for Zherdev (even a late pick or something). As if he clears. The market for a talented top-6 caliber player is there, you'd think. Very odd.

Reason: Holmgren* ofc.

Would like to see the Wild put in a claim on Zherdev. They weren't going to be buyers but a free pick-up like this I'm sure they'd have no qualms. With Koivu being out, Miettinen is render useless. Picking up a scorer like Zherdev and hoping for lightning in a bottle with either Havlat or Bouchard wouldn't be such a bad play.
Though, it's hard to imagine Zherdev clearing all the way to the Wild given how tight the races are with very few sellers right now.

For all the talk of Zherdev's "raw talent" and the fact that he's pushing 20 goals without much ice time, he's going to be on his fourth team in four years (3 NHL/1 KHL). Columbus gave up on him, the Rangers let him walk, and the Flyers waived him. Clearly there's a reason beyond his stats that teams keep distancing themselves from him.
Can Rivet play well enough to hold down 10 minutes a game for Chicago? They need D depth badly. They will get torn apart in the playoffs if Boynton or Cullimore have to play regularly in case of an injury.
I can see the Leafs claiming Kotalik for 1.5 if it wasn't for the fact that he is signed for next year too. He can fill in on the point for the PP, he has a canon shot. The Leafs have tried Tim Brent and Brett Lebda on the point, for goodness sake. Anyone should be an upgrade to the terrible PP.
But, again, the extra year will probably make everyone shy away.
Ottawa should be interested in Colliton/Zherdev/Svatos. Cheap contracts for the rest of the year. We need warm bodies and should place an emphasis on Bingo making the playoffs this year, for the fans down there.

If he's paired with a mobile partner, maybe. I wouldn't put his game much above either Boynton or Cullimore at this point. His legs are just shot.

Pushing it. He still has good positional awareness, works well with his stick. But he isn't nearly as physical as before his shoulder injury and is SLOW. Great guy but, he's pretty much done. Then again on Chicago with a better D around him he might not be bad.

What are the rules for calling up a player you waived once the playoffs start?
My thinking is this: Homer gets a couple million to **** with, Zherdev most likely gets claimed by a team that doesn't matter, and in the bizarre off chance that he clears, they have a couple million bucks AND an injury callup in the playoffs. More valuable than a 5th rounder or whatever.

not really.
Definitely not a top 6 forward when you factor in the detriments (lazy, no D, no chemistry with the team).
