Not surprised. He's broken down, and nobody is going to pay him at that cap hit when they have better options in their own system, including at the AHL level. I think a team may consider it if they put him on re-entry waivers, but even then he might not be grabbed. He won't be sent to Portland, either.

Let's say that Captain Craig clears. (Wow I'm having an alliteration streak.) And let's say Uncle Terry wants to "reward" him by giving him to another team at a discount, in other words bringing him up on re-entry waivers so the Sabres pay part of his salary and the other team pays a part? Thereby upping the chances he gets picked up because "hey, he's really cheap let's grab him!"

How long would he have to be in Portland? Can Darcy just immediately put him on re-entry waivers? That would be pretty damn cool of Pegula, I dunno. Not that it's going to happen, but could it?
i believe he can be excused from reporting to Portland entirely

That's what I was thinking, but wasn't sure. It'd be cool if they did that for him, but I can also understand why they wouldn't. Just wondering if it was feasible. Thanks Jame, you're a good guy no matter what joshjull says about you.

By the way expect the Buffalo Sabres to put Craig Rivet on re-entry waivers to see if teams would take him at half the price...

edit: Reentry cost will be about a 425k cap hit. Be VERY shocked if he is put on and isn't picked up.

For his sake, here's hoping. This has just got to suck for him.

Well cool, I hope that happens for him. Somebody out there has to be able to use him. Maybe he can head back to San Jose. He can't be much worse than Wallin.

Paul Martin is on the mend and Brooks Orpik is expected to miss 4 weeks.

Maybe the Pens add him?

Montreal is in desperate need of defensemen.

Maybe they bring back Rivet for a farewell tour?

Nice thing to do by Regier to put Rivet straight to re-entry instead of thinking it further.

Now I just hope someone picks Rivet and that team plays atleast once this season in Buffalo so that the fans can show him their love. (Even if he was rather useless this season)

Montreal just traded for Sopel.

Gotta think between that and Pegula's PA connections, this is a pretty good possibility.

We're talking less than 1% of the salary cap, now that he's on re-entry.

It was sad that the folks sitting near me at last nights game who insisted that this was done to cut salary and free up cap space. I tried explaining pro-rating and they were clueless. It did take some of the bombast out of a few of them though to find out Buffalo could take on over $17 million in cap hit for the remainder of the season as of yesterday.

My friends bombarded him on twitter last year with a rumor we were grabbing Khabibulin. It was up in 10 minutes. Hilarious stuff.

I don't see how Pegula's connections have anything to do with a guy we just waived.

I'm glad they are putting him on re-entry to try and allow Craig a chance to resume his career.

With the new ownership they speak of how they want this to be a place that players would want to come too.

Its being a class act in trying any options they have to give him a chance to keep playing. He's been rotting in the press box long enough.

Tried to trade, waived and now re-entry.

I don't think they have a problem with Rivet he is just not in their plans at all anymore.Time to move on

So... what would be the plan if he wasn't claimed on re-entry? Outright release?

Eh, probably let him ride it out through the end of the year. All that talk of "doing right by players" and the "little things"... Dumping him to the curb to save $850K seems a bit counter to those comments.

That's not an issue because they can't do it. If he's not claimed on re-entry, there's little that can be done. I'm sure Rivet doesn't want to go to Portland, so he'll be stuck in the Buffalo press box. He still gets paid, though, and there's no way Buffalo can avoid that obligation. I'm not sure if they can put players on waivers after the deadline, but if they can, I suppose they can try waiver and re-entry later on.

I think Rivet is going back to the Sharks if the Brian Burke doesn't spoil it. The Canucks should also be interested with Bieska, Edler, and Alberts out. The Sharks and Nucks couldn't even consider Rivet on regular waivers due to their cap situations.
