The Oilers have already mastered the art of dead body storage with Smac, JFJ and Fraser in the lineup and you can throw in Strudwick there as well. Too easy.

At least those guys will punch you in the face. Zherdev is more likely to hit you with his purse. While I agree the names you mentioned are cannon fodder, you don't replace grit players with skill players. Toughness is still a big part of the NHL.

I will say this hurts the Hemsky market somewhat.

While Zherdev is nowhere near as good as Hemsky (plus has questions about his character), he fills the same kind of roll. Plus with him being UFA, it allows teams to think "ok we'll address than need in the offseason, now we'll just roll with what's free", especially if a team is feeling this isn't there year.

I wouldn't immediately say no to Zherdev.

Downside: questionable work ethic and poor defensive game. He's obviously skilled, but he's moved around a lot. He wasn't happy in Philadelphia, NY, and had contract issues in Columbus. Maturity issues? Prima donna? Likely.

Upside: He's 26, skilled, averages 60 points in an 82 game season; he's available for free, has decent size and doesn't have a history of injuries.

A gamble? Not much of one--he costs nothing. Renney knows him as a player. The question: Would he, like Socrates, corrupt our youth? You can always waive the player, if you don't like how he's shaping up. Twenty games isn't long and gives you a fair opportunity to see if he's going to fit with the team. Also, if Hemsky is on the way out for the Sun, Moon, and stars (more pieces to our future), Zherdev could play with two reasonably defensively responsible players:

MPS-Horcoff-Zherdev

Sometimes players in this league just need to find the right fit to flourish. A lot, of course, never do, but I'm not opposed to some experimentation or reclaimation projects. Renney would have the best insight on him.

Didn't feel like making a new waiver thread, but:

Marco Sturm (LAK) on waivers
Kris Newbury (NYR) on waivers
Mike Commodore (CBJ) on re-entry
Todd Ford (WAS) on waivers
Wade Belak (NAS) on waivers
Craig Rivet (BUF) on re-entry

Go on and say we should fetch all of them...
